Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Ocean breezes bring a savory saline balance to the wine’s intense fruit character. Bright in color with gentile notes of green and light yellow. In the nose, it shows intensity with the expression of tropical fruits such as mango, pineapple and passion fruit. It is complimented by a soft citric sensation as well as spicy and floral notes, reminiscent of ginger and jasmine. In the mouth it shows a balanced acidity, viscosity and long complex finish.

Ideal with goat cheese, shellfish, oysters, and mild fish.

In 1999, the Garces Silva family planted their first vines in Leyda, a more extreme coastal setting than most of Casablanca to the north, where the boom in plantings was already well underway. When they built Amayna in 2002, it was the area’s first winery. Diego Rivera makes this sauvignon in stainless steel, presenting it’s luscious, ripe fruit in the context of desert freshness—ripe notes of kumquat and pineapple, rich agave depths and salted-cucumber crunch. It’s deeply flavorful, a deliciously refreshing coastal white.

Aromas of chalk and apples, as well as lemons with a fresh palate that delivers an array of nectarines in delicious mode.

Dusty lime and ocean breeze aromas are fresh and chiseled. There's more to the palate of this coastal SB than many of its kin, with pushy acidity and volume. Green apple, citrus and salty flavors conclude on a round finish with ample body.

The Garces Silva family is one of the pioneers in the Leyda Valley's viticultural development and planted the land with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The vines are now reaching optimal maturity of 10 years old, and have begun to produce some very dynamic and unique expressions of Chardonnay. Located in a valley that lies between the Coastal Mountain Range and the Pacific Ocean, Amayna's gental coastal hills are characterized by organically poor soils and a maritime climate. Sitting 8.5 miles from the Pacific Ocean, the vineyards receive cool ocean breezes and maritime humidity to create a perfect balance. They harvest by hand and employ gravitational flow in lieu of pumps to create elegant wines.

Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.

An officially recognized sub-zone in the southern part of the San Antonio Valley, the Leyda Valley was the original settlement of the wine pioneers who came to the area in the 1990s. They were in search of cooler and wetter growing conditions—as compared to more eastern, drier and often warmer locations.

Planting, which began only in the late 1990s, focused on Sauvignon blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot noir and some limited spots for Syrah. The area continues to receive well-earned accolades for wines of these varieties.
