Winemaker Notes

This beautiful and dark garnet wine shows a complex nose of black fruits, chili powder, tomato, and lead pencil that integrate beautifully with the subtle, attractive oak. In the mouth, the wine is rich and elegant, showing ripe fruit, nice balance, and proportion. Integrated tannins enhance the texture; the finish is complex, generous, and long. While this wine can be enjoyed now it will benefit greatly from additional cellaring and, with proper storage, should develop for ten years or more.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Artist Series comes from a mix of vineyards and includes 7% Petit Verdot, all aged in 54% new French oak. (There's a splash of Hungarian oak as well.) Darker currants, mulberries, new leather, lead pencil, and plenty of herbal, floral notes emerge from this medium to full-bodied red, a pure, incredibly polished, balanced effort with loads of character. It already offers pleasure today yet should evolve for another 20 years if stored correctly.

Red cherry, redcurrant and black tea on the nose. Full-bodied with silky tannins. Very focused on the palate with clear, articulate acidity. Sleek and concentrated. 93% cabernet sauvignon and 7% petit verdot. Drink or hold.

Made with 7% Petit Verdot, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Artist Series is juicy, ripe and dark red-fruited with a heady and aromatic nose with hints of roasted red bell pepper, black cherry and sage before hints of graphite and oak spices sway from the glass. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is balanced with layers of finesse and focus while expressing bright acidity and fine-grained tannins. The wine glides to a delightfully spicy finish and will remain food-friendly for over a decade. Rating: 92+

Wine Enthusiast
Woodward began its artist series wines in 1992. The 2019 growing season was cut short by frost, and at times this wine seems to reflect that. The aromas start out leaning into the green, with notes of fresh garden herbs and savory green pepper. Cherry and carob notes are there too. There's a lovely deftness to the palate, as there is with many wines from this vintage, with intensity too. Give it time in bottle to see it at its best. Drink after 2027.

Woodward Canyon, Washington
Woodward Canyon Winery Image
Woodward Canyon Winery, named for the canyon Rick’s family farmed and where the Estate Vineyard is now located, was established in 1981 by Rick Small and his wife, Darcey Fugman-Small. Woodward Canyon was the second winery in the Walla Walla Valley and the Smalls were instrumental in the process of obtaining federal approval of the Walla Walla Valley appellation.

The winery has consistently produced premium, age-worthy, award-winning Cabernet Sauvignons and Merlots as well as Chardonnays. From the outset, Rick determined that quality would take precedence over quantity.

Consequently, Woodward Canyon has remained small. Woodward Canyon is located in Lowden in the Walla Walla Valley appellation. The tasting room is a restored 1870's farmhouse.

Woodward Canyon is a founding member of the Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance and VINEA, the Walla Walla Valley Winegrowers' Sustainable Trust.

Washington produces so many exciting wines, and that definitely includes Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. With over 10,000 acres under vine, Cabernet Sauvignon is now the most widely-grown varietal in the state. Terrific examples hail from sub-appellations like Red Mountain, Wahluke Slope, Horse Heaven Hills and Walla Walla Valley. One of the fascinations of these Columbia Valley Cabs is that they so often seem to have one foot in the New World and one in the Old. Representing the former are characteristics like the ripe, forward fruit that results from long sunny days during the growing season (up to two hours longer than in much of California). Old World similarities include an undeniable brightness from acidity, as well as notes of herbs, graphite and a dusty, sometimes gravelly minerality.

Whether you’re looking for a budget bottle for everyday enjoyment, or a stellar, world-class wine with tremendous aging potential, Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon wines can deliver the goods! Among the many fine options are bottles from Columbia Crest, Chateau Ste. Michelle, L’ecole #41, Quilceda Creek and Leonetti.
