Distilled and bottled at cask strength in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this spirit aged in used European redwine casks; after the wine was removed, the casks were broken down and their interiors shaved, re-toasted, and re-charred to energize the wood sugars before they were reassembled. Aromas of cinnamon and walnut go deep before a warmth spreads on the palate, where the high proof is well controlled, leaving a trace of orange peel and honeyed peach. The finish strikes a balance between power and fruity elegance with a hint of black pepper and vanilla wafer.
Virginia Distillery Company is an American Single Malt Whisky distillery located amongst the Blue Ridge Mountains in Central Virginia.
Courage & Conviction, their American Single Malt whisky product, is currently being produced on-site using malted barley from the U.S. and water from Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Sherry, Cuvée and Bourbon casks are used to age this unique whisky. They expect to release this whisky in three to six years’ time from casking, with a target release date in 2020.
While they wait for Courage & Conviction to age, enjoy the Virginia-Highland Whisky series, made from 100% malted barley. These whiskies showcase both Old World and New World whisky making. Virginia Distillery Company marries single malt whisky made on-site in Virginia with aged malt whisky from Scotland. A focus on cask finishing adds depth and complexity.
A popular favorite among emerging niche categories of American Whiskies, American Single Malts now compete with the best from Scotland, Ireland and Japan. American Single Malt Whiskeys must be mashed, distilled and matured at a single distillery and made entirely from malted barley. There are well over one hundred distillers producing a variety of high-quality American Single Malt Whiskeys.
