    Winemaker Notes

The wine is austere and elegant, with a large and complex aroma, gentle and deep on the palate. Gattinara is a Nebbiolo with a vocation for long and very long aging. Gattinara may be the most esteemed appellation in the Alto Piemonte, and today’s Vallana version has become the estate’s flagship wine.

The firm was established in the current form in 1937, but the Vallana family has a long tradition in the wine business dating back to the eighteenth century.

The Vallana estate is located in Alto Piemonte (Northern Piedmont), in the North West of Italy. The soils here are Schuhe acidic, unlike the rest of Italy, and the climate is positively influenced by the beautiful mountains and lakes of the region. The combination of climate and soil make this a very unique terroir.

Vallana makes red wines of incredible longevity from Spanna, the local name for Nebbiolo. Campi Raudii, Spanna, Boca and Gattinara are the four Vallana Nebbiolo-based wines. Vallana makes wine also from other native varieties, like the world famous Barbera.

Attracting the most glory, prestige and fame to the Piedmont region, Nebbiolo in all of its expressions—Barolo, Barbaresco, Roero, Ghemme and Gattinara—creates a complex wine, truly unique for its delicate qualities combined with strength and a great potential to improve over time.

But Nebbiolo isn’t all there is to red wine from Piedmont! Barbera is the most planted variety and historically most popular as a dependable, food-friendly, everyday wine.

Beyond these two, a surprising number of red varieties call Piedmont their home. Worth a try include Dolcetto for its bold concentration and aromas of spice cake. Other grapes to investigate include Freisa, Croatina, Brachetto, Grignolino and Pelaverga.
