Winemaker Notes
Two Angels Petite Sirah is very dark purple in color and boasts savory aromas of ripe dark berries, cherries, plum, rich toasty notes, with a hint of roast game. The flavors mimic the aromas on this well balanced Petite Sirah. It is well structured, with a silkiness that belies the weight and big body of this wine. The finish is long and luxurious.

COMMENTARY: The 2018 Two Angels Petite Sirah shows that the Red Hills AVA of Lake County may be one of the best places for this grape variety. TASTING NOTES: This wine is intense yet not overwhelming, as it keeps everything in balance. Enjoy its aromas and flavors of blackberries and earth with an old-fashioned beef stew. Blackberry, black-ink and black-cherry aromas follow through to a full body with polished, juicy tannins and wonderful depth of dark fruit and bark. Some black mushrooms, too. Serious effort here. 100% petite sirah. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

With its deep color, firm tannins and bold flavors, there is nothing petite about Petite Sirah. The variety, originally known as Durif in the Rhône, took on its more popular moniker after being imported to California in the early 1880s. Quintessentially recognized today as a grape of the Golden State, Petite Sirah works well blended with Zinfandel and finds success as a single varietal wine in the state’s warmer districts. Somm Secret—Petite Sirah is not a smaller version of Syrah but it is an offspring of Syrah and the now nearly extinct French Alpine variety called Peloursin.
Sitting on the northeast side of the Clear Lake appellation, this warm area boasts multiple soil types that allow growers a lot of flexibility and experimentation with grape varieties. While Sauvignon blanc is a mainstay, this zone excels with Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, as well as other less common varieties like Barbera and Tempranillo.
