Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

A full-bodied Mendocino Chardonnay featuring an aroma of lemon, pear and a touch of cinnamon. Nice entrance, juicy mid-palate with a long finish and cleansing crisp acidity. The perfect wine for light fare, deep conversation and declaring your independence.

Professional Ratings

Crisp apple aromas meet very rich, ripe pear and melted butter flavors in this full-bodied wine. The fruit flavors are delicious and ripe while a rather soft texture makes it smooth and creamy on the palate.

It was time to break away from convention. From those that would say things like "Make sure your structure is firm and your acidity is lively.” It was time to create something to call our own. A wine for the people. So, we brought forth a union of wines unshackled by the past, yet deeply rooted in the American ideal of “Whatever I’m drinking should taste good dammit.” Distinctly American craft wines wrought with as much character and bold spirits as the figures that don every bottle. Born from the virtues of every forward-thinking, hard-working, red-blooded American, this is The Federalist; this is American craft wine.

The Federalist's vineyards are located in Sonoma County, California, and sourced from 100% estate grown new vines on the estate

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

A large and diverse appellation within California’s North Coast AVA, Mendocino is home to several smaller sub-regions—most notably the Anderson Valley. This scenic region, with rolling hills covered in redwood forests as well as vineyards, is one of the world’s top producers of certified organically-grown grapes. Due to wide geographical and climatic variation, a vast array of wine styles can be found here.
