Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The glass fills with a dark purple color. Aromas of blackberry and brambly fill the nose along with smoky vanilla notes. The palate is dense with black fruit, smoke, caramel and vanilla. A strong entrance, good mid-palate with a nice weight and long finish.

This wine has aromas like toasted oak and baking spices, plus flavors like rich blackberry and boysenberry jam. It's also nicely dry and has a good gripping layer of tannin in the texture.

The Federalist The Federalist Anthem Winery Video

It was time to break away from convention. From those that would say things like "Make sure your structure is firm and your acidity is lively.” It was time to create something to call our own. A wine for the people. So, we brought forth a union of wines unshackled by the past, yet deeply rooted in the American ideal of “Whatever I’m drinking should taste good dammit.” Distinctly American craft wines wrought with as much character and bold spirits as the figures that don every bottle. Born from the virtues of every forward-thinking, hard-working, red-blooded American, this is The Federalist; this is American craft wine.

The Federalist's vineyards are located in Sonoma County, California, and sourced from 100% estate grown new vines on the estate

Unapologetically bold, spice-driven and jammy, Zinfandel has secured its title as the darling of California vintners by adapting well to the state's diverse microclimates and landscapes. Born in Croatia, it later made its way to southern Italy where it was named Primitivo. Fortunately, the imperial nursery of Vienna catalogued specimens of the vine, and it later made its way to New England in 1829. Parading the true American spirit, Zinfandel found a new home in California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Somm Secret—California's ancient vines of Zinfandel are those that survived the neglect of Prohibition; today these vines produce the most concentrated, ethereal and complex examples.

A large and diverse appellation within California’s North Coast AVA, Mendocino is home to several smaller sub-regions—most notably the Anderson Valley. This scenic region, with rolling hills covered in redwood forests as well as vineyards, is one of the world’s top producers of certified organically-grown grapes. Due to wide geographical and climatic variation, a vast array of wine styles can be found here.
