Winemaker Notes
The silky and detailed 2018 Staglin Cabernet is a poised and elegant classic that impresses with its old-world charms and modern-day precision. Initial notes of herb laden cassis and cedary plums evolve into layers of lavender infused raspberry liqueur and menthol lifted cherry compote spiced by green peppercorns, ground coffee and a dusting Piment d'Espelette. The beautiful weight, delicate concentration and powder fine-grained structure delivers a wonderfully graceful and balanced palate experience that is a sheer classy delight.
Blend: 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot

I was able to taste two wines from Staglin Family, both showing brilliantly. An utterly ultra-classic Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon from Staglin sports a deep ruby/plum color to go with a gorgeous bouquet of ripe blackcurrant and blackberry fruits as well as spicy oak, chocolate, smoked tobacco, and lead pencil shavings. Full-bodied, perfectly balanced, rich, and opulent, yet also pure and precise, this might be the finest vintage of this cuvée ever produced. Rating: 98+

COMMENTARY: Founded in 1985 by Shari, Garen, Brandon, and Shannon, the Staglin Family Vineyard has risen to the top of the class among Rutherford AVA producers. The 2018 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is riveting and accomplished. TASTING NOTES: This wine shines with aromas of fragrant berries, hints of chalk, and well-balanced oak nuances. Pair it with a well-seasoned crown roast of lamb. (Tasted: September 10, 2022, San Francisco, CA)

Decanter
Opaque, deep ruby, hint of mahogany on the rim. Expressive, classic Cabernet nose of graphite, fresh green leaf, mulberry and fresh currants. Cedar oak underpins the fruit aromatics. The first impression is one of an intensely serious wine. On the palate, that impression continues until the dark, sweet, ripe berry fruit begins to emerge and broaden and intensify in flavour. At that point, the wine relaxes a little and shows its Napa Valley heritage; all fresh, healthy, ripe dark berries from a truly excellent vintage. The tannin texture is grainy and firm but well integrated, leaving no grippy edges, just a rounded mouthfeel. The finish, long and flavourful, mimics the opening in its freshness, with a hint of mint and wild sage. This wine is drinking now but is young and will benefit cellaring for another three to four years before enjoying a long and happy life likely shaking off its serious mantle and maintaining its overtly fruity profile over the next 12 to 15 years.

Rich and seductive, with velvety dark plum, mulberry and boysenberry fruit flavors gliding through, infused with anise, roasted apple wood and black tea notes. The fruit echoes persistently through the finish, where a violet notes adds additional charm. A very suave wine that nearly flaunts its texture. Drink now through 2035.

Founded in 1985 by Shari, Garen, Brandon and Shannon, Staglin Family Vineyard takes pride in the tradition of family ownership and participation. With an uncompromising commitment to quality, their mission is to produce world-class wines that reflect the distinctive character of this historic Rutherford Bench estate. As stewards of this land, they farm the vineyard organically, tap into their solar fields for power and produce the wines in a state-of-the-art underground production facility. The Staglins are passionate about their business, their land, their philanthropy and for the meaningful relationships they develop with each passing day. They hope this passion is evident when you enjoy their wines.
In addition to the flagship Staglin Family Vineyard label, they also produce a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chardonnay under the Salus label. Named after the Roman goddess of health and well-being, they donate 100% of the proceeds from the sales of these wines toward fundraising for mental and brain health research, a cause that is very near and dear to our hearts. Over the last 30 years, they have raised over $513 million dollars for this charity.
A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.
The Rutherford sub-region of Napa Valley centers on the town of Rutherford and covers some of Napa Valley’s finest vineyard real estate, spanning from the Mayacamas in the west, to the Vaca Mountains on the other side of the valley.
Inside of the Rutherford AVA, bordering the Mayacamas, is a stretch of uplands called the Rutherford Bench. (These bench lands technically run the length of Oakville as well). Mountain runoff creates deep, well-drained, alluvial soils on the bench, giving vine roots plenty of reason to permeate deep into the ground. The result is wine with great structure and complexity.
Rutherford Cabernet Sauvingons and Bordeaux Blends garner substantial attention for their enticing fragrances of dusty earth and dried herbs, broad and juicy mid-palates and lush and fine-grained tannins. The sub-appellation claims some of the valley’s most prized vineyards today, namely Caymus, Rubicon and Beckstoffer Georges III.
It is also home to Napa’s most influential and historic personalities. Thomas Rutherford, responsible for the appellation's name, made serious investments here in grape growing and wine production between the years of 1850 to 1880. Gustave Niebaum purchased a large swath of land and completed his winery in 1887, calling it “Inglenook.” Today this remains the oldest bonded winery in California. Georges Latour founded Beaulieu Vineyard in 1900, making it the oldest continuous winery in the state. Latour also hired the famous enologist, André Tchelistcheff, a man credited for single-handedly defining the modern Napa winemaking style.
