Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The color is bright, deep crimson. The nose reveals aromas of blackberries, black raspberries and ripe strawberries with just a touch of anise and spices such as clove and cinnamon. It is a medium bodied wine with graceful texture, balanced acidity and very ripe elegant tannins. The finish is moderately long, full of red fruits with a touch of sweet vanilla and black pepper.

Blend: 100% Agiorgitiko

This bottling is a great example of the power and finesse Greek reds can offer. Starting with focused aromas of cherry, olives and dried herbs, it follows with substantive tobacco spice, olive and red-currant flavors. Medium bodied with good structure, minerality and lots of texture, the wine could age for several more years. It is a delicious wine for a great price. Diamond Importers Inc. Cellar Selection.

Argolida Valley in Peloponnesos is a blessed land full of nature's gifts: world-famous for its citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, tangerines), its olive oil and olives, it is now fast becoming synonymous with our wines also. George Skouras, proprietor, oenologist and wine-maker at Domaine Skouras studied oenology at the University of Dijon. He went to work for a number of wineries in France, Italy and Greece before setting up his own in Pyrgela in Argolida Valley 1987.

Native the Peloponnese peninsula of Greece, Agioritiko is the star variety here and in fact, the only one permitted to carry the Nemea appellation. While it favors the hot Mediterranean climate of Greece, it performs best in Nemea’s high altitude mountain vineyards between 1,350 to 2,000 feet where fully ripe grapes can also achieve great acidity and structure. Somm Secret—As one of Greece's oldest varieties, wines made from Agioritiko were historically often associated with the half-god Heracules and referred to as the "Blood of Heracles.”
