Winemaker Notes

The color is bright, deep and clear ruby-red. On the nose, it is dense with strength and power. Aromas are focused on red fruits such as morello, blackberries and red cherries as well as dried herbs, aromas of spices and a mineral touch. On the mouth, it has a medium-plus body with an intriguing acidity and very qualitative tannins. Flavors of red fruits, earth and minerals along with tobacco and spices are apparent. The finish is long, complex, and constantly evolves.

Blend: 100% Agiorgitiko

The 2011 Grande Cuvée, the most recent of this issue's mini-vertical, hails from a far more elegant vintage than its predecessor, the 2003. Bright, persistent and laced with rather exciting, fresh cherry flavors leaning to raspberries, this wine's acidity drills the fruit into the palate. It is not as concentrated as in some years, but despite difficulties in the vintage it nicely balances the acidity and concentration of fruit. It should always be rather lively with a fresh and invigorating feel. It will make a great food wine, understated but appealing.

Argolida Valley in Peloponnesos is a blessed land full of nature's gifts: world-famous for its citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, tangerines), its olive oil and olives, it is now fast becoming synonymous with our wines also. George Skouras, proprietor, oenologist and wine-maker at Domaine Skouras studied oenology at the University of Dijon. He went to work for a number of wineries in France, Italy and Greece before setting up his own in Pyrgela in Argolida Valley 1987.

Beyond the usual suspects, there are hundreds of red grape varieties grown throughout the world. Some are indigenous specialties capable of producing excellent single varietal wines, while others are better suited for use as blending grapes. Each has its own distinct viticultural characteristics, as well as aroma and flavor profiles, offering much to be discovered by the curious wine lover. In particular, Portugal and Italy are known for having a multitude of unique varieties but they can really be found in any region.
