Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The 2017 Siduri Anderson Valley Pinot Noir comes from three vineyards in Anderson Valley. The dark, concentrated fruit was cold soaked for an average of four days, followed by a mix of punch-downs and pump-overs during the length of fermentation. Aged for 15 months in 35% new French oak, this wine has aromas of warm oak spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon, followed by pomegranate, black plum, fresh boysenberry, Portobello mushroom, chestnut, sage, chamomile, and forest floor. The flavors include tart red plum, raspberry, and red currant. Bright acid leads at the front of the palate with a full, juicy texture in the middle. Fine and focused tannin adds length to the finish.

Including just 10% whole clusters and brought up in 20% new barrels, the 2017 Pinot Noir Anderson Valley reveals a ruby color as well as a spice-laced bouquet of red currants, dried herbs, and some loamy soil notes. This medium-bodied, supple, and lightly textured effort gains depth and richness with time in the glass.

COMMENTARY: The 2017 Siduri Anderson Valley Pinot Noir is an excellent now-drinking wine. TASTING NOTES: This wine is bright and full of easy-drinking ripe fruit. Pair its alluring aromas and flavors of red and blue fruits with grilled pork chops in a mushroom-wine reduction sauce. (Tasted: May 17, 2019, San Francisco, CA)

Pale to medium ruby-purple in color, the 2017 Pinot Noir Anderson Valley has a pretty, broody nose of warm black and red cherries, spiced blueberry pie, forest floor and dried leaves with amaro hints. Light to medium-bodied, it's very soft and silky in the mouth with a good interplay of warm fruits and earth and great juicy acidity on the finish

Siduri Founders Adam & Dianna Lee Winery Image

Two Pinot Noir lovers, Adam and Dianna Lee, founded Siduri Wines in 1994. They produced only four and a half barrels of Pinot Noir that first vintage. Now they handcraft over 10,000 cases of Pinot Noir from vineyards ranging from Oregon's Willamette Valley down to the Santa Rita Hills and Santa Lucia Highlands AVAs. Each Pinot Noir is created using gravity flow and minimal intervention, with the goal of reflecting the unique terroir of each particular vineyard. Siduri Wines and its sibling, Novy Family Wines have received the Wine Spectator's New York Wine Experience "Critics Choice" recognition a combined seven times since 2004.

Anderson Valley, located in Mendocino County just above Sonoma County, is one of California’s coolest AVAs, allowing it a long growing season. Only 15 miles long, the region makes a slice eastward through the mountains, from the frigid Pacific Ocean. Dramatic diurnal temperature variations here preserve grape acidity and thus freshness in the finished wines. These are prime conditions for growing Pinot Noir, and the valley produces many fine versions. Characteristics of Anderson Valley Pinot Noir typically include crisp acidity, cranberry and strawberry notes as well as earthy notes of forest floor and mushroom.

Still Pinot Noir, however, is only part of the story. Pinot Noir, along with Chardonnay, are also grown for Anderson Valley’s exceptional sparkling wines. Produced via the traditional method, these offer a classic toasty note from lees aging, bright, complex fruit notes and a clean, refreshing character.
