Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

An almost opaque deep red colour. A very intense aroma with balsamic notes of resin, cedar, tobacco box and shrubby touches. Additional spicy notes of black pepper, clove and ginger integrate with undertones of cocoa and chocolate, courtesy of a good maturation. In the mouth, this wine has excellent volume and firm, powerful tannins. Its well-integrated acidity balances notes of resin and spices and invites a long finish of great persistence.

Ripe and fruity, this is already delicious, but that doesn't detract from the firm tannins and density of a wine that will age well. It has all the elements, with the fruit, solid tannins and a juicy aftertaste. Drink from 2025.

From an extremely successful vintage comes only the second bottling of this single quinta Port, from Sandeman's Quinta do Seixo vineyard which covers 108 hectares in Cima Corgo. Grapes are sourced from various blocks of the vineyard, including a section with vines over 100 years old which provide 25% of the grapes for this wine. Fermentation took place in traditional granite lagares, and the wine was aged in ‘balseiro’ (very large old oak casks) at Sandeman’s cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. It is a gorgeous, inky purple in colour, with a rich nose of blue fruit, plum and currants. Powdery-fine tannins support a plump, super-juicy palate of black fruits and sweet cherry, with hints of blue fruit, sweet spice, liquorice and chocolate. Very vibrant, with an elegant freshness that balances the alcohol and sweetness. This is still very youthful and tight, and should age for well over a decade. If you want to drink it sooner, a good double decant will not only remove the sediment but also inject some much needed oxygen to open it up.

Grippy, chewy and pleasantly rustic, this sports lots of licorice root, roasted alder and apple wood and tar notes around a core of steeped plum and warmed fig fruit. Reveals a Turkish coffee echo through the finish, with the grip on full display. A throwback style. Best from 2030 through 2050.

The 2015 Port Quinta do Seixo is a blend of Touriga Franca (40%), Touriga Nacional (28%), old vines (15%), Tinta Roriz (12%) and Sousão (5%). It comes in with 100 grams per liter of residual sugar. In bottle for about two months when seen, this was opened (not decanted) about three hours in advance of tasting. It has a nice backbone, showing tight and a bit hard, but its relatively rich fruit counters with classic flavors. Many are pointing to Douro Superior for the best Ports in 2015, but this Cima Corgo offering has lovely fruit as well as the good concentration to balance the structure. This isn't the most elegant Porto, though; for that, try its sibling the Quinta do Porto, also from Sogrape (Ferreira). This might be approachable early, but you really need to let it sit for at least a decade or more for better results.

The House of Sandeman was founded in London in 1790 by George Sandeman, a young Scotsman from Perth who borrowed £300 to invest in a wine trading business with products from Porto and Jerez. More than 230 years later, an average of 21 bottles of Sandeman are bought every minute in more than 75 countries. The Sandeman portfolio includes Ports, Sherries and Madeira's and has been recognized as the world's most awarded portfolio of Aged Tawnies for the past six years by Decanter, IWC and IWSC.

As for the infamous Sandeman Don, a Scottish artist named George Massiot Brown approached Sandeman in 1928 to design a poster to advertise the brand. Incorporating the company's Ports of Portugal and their Spanish Sherries, The Don is wearing a wide-brimmed Spanish had like the caballeros of Jerez and a Portuguese student's cape. The Don became famous and was one of the very first design icons for wine. Today the Don has become part of the very essence of the Sandeman brand and can be found on every bottle sold.

Port is a sweet, fortified wine with numerous styles: Ruby, Tawny, Vintage, Late Bottled Vintage (LBV), White, Colheita, and a few unusual others. It is blended from from the most important red grapes of the Douro Valley, based primarily on Touriga Nacional with over 80 other varieties approved for use. Most Ports are best served slightly chilled at around 55-65°F.

The home of Port—perhaps the most internationally acclaimed beverage—the Douro region of Portugal is one of the world’s oldest delimited wine regions, established in 1756. The vineyards of the Douro, set on the slopes surrounding the Douro River (known as the Duero in Spain), are incredibly steep, necessitating the use of terracing and thus, manual vineyard management as well as harvesting. The Douro's best sites, rare outcroppings of Cambrian schist, are reserved for vineyards that yield high quality Port.

While more than 100 indigenous varieties are approved for wine production in the Douro, there are five primary grapes that make up most Port and the region's excellent, though less known, red table wines. Touriga Nacional is the finest of these, prized for its deep color, tannins and floral aromatics. Tinta Roriz (Spain's Tempranillo) adds bright acidity and red fruit flavors. Touriga Franca shows great persistence of fruit and Tinta Barroca helps round out the blend with its supple texture. Tinta Cão, a fine but low-yielding variety, is now rarely planted but still highly valued for its ability to produce excellent, complex wines.

White wines, generally crisp, mineral-driven blends of Arinto, Viosinho, Gouveio, Malvasia Fina and an assortment of other rare but local varieties, are produced in small quantities but worth noting.

With hot summers and cool, wet winters, the Duoro has a maritime climate.
