Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The 2021 Kokerboom displays ginger and cordial lime entry on the palate; the secondary aromas are more the classic lanolin waxy aromas associated with Semillon. However, this vintage is very fresh, and the same Granny Smith, greener apple aromas found in the Skurfberg, are to be found in this wine. The power is at the very end of this wine.

The 2021 Old Vine Series Kokerboom offers a waxy and dusty nose with hints of lime yogurt and lemon meringue and elements of spiced white tea. Medium to full-bodied, the palate bursts to life with vivacious energy and focus, exploding with sweet citrus flavors without being overdone. Composed of Sémillon and Sémillon Gris, the wine will remain food-friendly until its 20th birthday and perhaps beyond.

This wine grows in the citrus country north of Swartland proper and includes 20 percent sémillon gris (“red green grape,” as it’s known locally). Waxy aromas make for an inviting, viscously-textured wine. A blush of yellow apple flavor adds intensity, but most of the pleasure lies in its concentrated texture. For fresh pasta sauced with lemon zest and plenty of Parmigiano Reggiano.

The Sadie Family strives for wines that are fresh, flavorsome, refined, harmonious and balanced and aims to offer drinking pleasure at the highest level of quality, at any stage of a wine's life: the wine-drinker's eagerness for a further glass is their measure of achievement!

The Sadie's two wines, Columella and Palladius, originate in the soils in the Swartland region, which stretches north of Cape Town between Durbanville and Piketberg, inland from the Atlantic Ocean, and centered on the town of Malmesbury. Importantly, the area has a remarkably stable climate, allowing a consistent level of quality each year, in subtly different vintage conditions.

Sémillon has the power to create wines with considerable structure, depth and length that will improve for several decades. It is the perfect partner to the vivdly aromatic Sauvignon Blanc. Sémillon especially shines in the Bordeaux region of Sauternes, which produces some of the world’s greatest sweet wines. Somm Secret—Sémillon was so common in South Africa in the 1820s, covering 93% of the country’s vineyard area, it was simply referred to as Wyndruif, or “wine grape.”

Literally meaning "the black land," Swartland takes its name from the endangered, indigenous "renosterbos" (translating to rhino bush), which used to be plentiful enough to turn the entire landscape a dark color certain during times of year. The district, attracting some of the most adventurous and least interventionist winemakers, excels in robust and full-bodied reds as well as quality fortified wines.
