Winemaker Notes

There’s an incredibly deep violet color that welcomes you to a seductive nose of dark berry, spice, and an attractive accent of toasty oak. The wine has a wide array of fruit textures – fresh, jammy, dried – that speaks to the uniqueness of Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel.

Pairs well with bold flavors or grilled food. Try Mediterranean dishes, lamb or eggplant moussaka, Asiago, Pecorino, or even a flourless bittersweet chocolate torte if you’re feeling festive.

This is made from two certified- organic vineyard sites and blended with 21% Petite Sirah. The whole is juicy in strawberry, blackberry, dried herb and clove, with plenty of grip and oak to make it substantial and structured. Dust and crushed rock provide complementary complexity and savory length.

The 2017 Zinfandel Black Boar includes about 21% Petite Sirah. Medium to deep ruby-purple in color, it offers aromas of cinnamon stick, tar, charcuterie and dried flowers with a core of jammy black fruits. The medium-bodied palate has well-managed ripeness, a firm, fresh frame and long, floral-laced finish. Rating : 92+

Plump with personality and zesty flavors, offering briary black raspberry, licorice and smoked pepper notes. Drink now through 2028.

  • 90

Scents of barbecue smoke introduce this tense and floral zinfandel. It’s earthy and rich, the smokiness melding with the scents of a flower garden. Serve it with roasted peppers stuffed with veal.

21% Petite Sirah. This one’s considerable complement of Petite Sirah imparts both a streak of earthy spice on the nose and a fair bit of sinewy tannin, yet the focus here is on deep, indelibly varietal, blackberry fruit with flashes of dark chocolate and loamy soil in complexing support. The wine is fleshy and full on the palate, and, while its aforementioned tannins are indeed evident, they are not out of bounds, and a few years of additional age are recommended not as a remedy to brutish astringency but as a path to further layering and polish.

Quivira Vineyards Winery Video

Family owned since its founding in 1981, proprietors Pete and Terri Kight were drawn to the estate's natural beauty and unspoiled rural character. With 63 acres of vines planted at Wine Creek Ranch, and another 26 at two sites close by, today Quivira Vineyards is a leading producer of Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc and Rhône varieties, with a reputation for intentional winegrowing and a thoughtful commitment to organic farming.

Quivira’s environmental stewardship has been all-encompassing. Beginning in 1998, we partnered with conservation agencies in restoring Wine Creek and Dry Creek for their native Steelhead and Coho populations. We keep beehives to promote pollination of our garden’s genetically diverse produce varieties and raise animals to provide fertilization material. It is our philosophy that the vines are only as healthy as the entire ranch therefore we farm holistically and sustainably, and further our commitment with each vintage.

Unapologetically bold, spice-driven and jammy, Zinfandel has secured its title as the darling of California vintners by adapting well to the state's diverse microclimates and landscapes. Born in Croatia, it later made its way to southern Italy where it was named Primitivo. Fortunately, the imperial nursery of Vienna catalogued specimens of the vine, and it later made its way to New England in 1829. Parading the true American spirit, Zinfandel found a new home in California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Somm Secret—California's ancient vines of Zinfandel are those that survived the neglect of Prohibition; today these vines produce the most concentrated, ethereal and complex examples.

Dry Creek Valley Wine

Sonoma County, California

View all products

A multifaceted and highly reputable sub-region of Sonoma, Dry Creek Valley is responsible for a wide range of wine styles—both red and white. One of the smallest AVAs in California, Dry Creek Valley has a winning combination of ideal geography and climate. Fertile, well-drained soils create concentrated varietal character while long, warm days, bookended by cool nights, allow grapes to reach full phenolic ripeness and balance. The warm and welcoming appellation is home to a number of family-owned vineyards and wineries that place a strong emphasis on sustainable farming practices.

Zinfandel reigns supreme here and still produces in a great number of very old vineyards—often 100 years old or older. These old vines create a powerful, voluptuous and sultry wine unlike those of any other region. Sauvignon Blanc, the valley’s signature white grape, also performs exceptionally well. Many other varieties grow comfortably here, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Syrah. Petite Sirah is often found in blends with Zinfandel.
