Winemaker Notes
This first release of Purlieu Cabernet Franc from the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard electrifies with powerful intensity and true varietal character. Purple fruit and fresh violet aromas on the nose only hint at the concentration that awaits on the palate. A focused beam of juicy purple and black berries melds with refined mocha and fresh earth notes, which bring extra depth and dimension to the sweet To Kalon fruit. Rich, fine-grained tannins and an endless finish of sweet boysenberry caramel promise years of continued evolution and delight.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is deep garnet-purple in color, slowly unfurling to reveal a nose of warm cassis, freshly crushed blackberries, black cherries and mulberries with touches of pencil lead, bay leaves, Indian spices and cast-iron pan. The full-bodied palate is densely laden with exotic spices and black fruit preserves, structured by very firm, ripe, grainy tannins and lovely freshness, finishing on a lingering mineral note.

Purlieu — “the edge of the forest” or “an outlying area” — is a reference to our home base in the new Coombsville AVA, at the edge of the forest and the Napa Valley. Symbolically, “purlieu” refers to our approach to winemaking, to exploring the outskirts and navigating the boundaries of what one may expect of a Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. For us, the key to successfully walking that edge lies in maintaining balance: between innovation and tradition, confidence and restraint, depth and refreshment.
Purlieu’s sister label, Le Pich, gets its name from a Wappo Indian term meaning “golden eagle.” They are hunting birds, and you can often spot them above our vineyards as they soar, glide, circle and arc. They are beautiful birds — stately and impressive, but not haughty or boasting, with a nimbleness that’s inspiring. We hope that our Le Pich wines live up to the character of their namesake.
