    Winemaker Notes

Pietrafitta Vernaccia di San Gimignano is fresh and fruity, but exhibits full-bodied character associated with the Vernaccia grape.

Vernaccia di San Gimignano was the very first Italian wine to receive the D.O.C. denomination. Centuries ago, the great renaissance painter and sculptor Mchelangelo wrote that the white wine of San Gimignano "kisses, licks, bites, slaps and stings," and that remains to this day an apt description for the way this style both sates and piques the appetite.

A versatile food wine that will accompany many dishes, including meats.

Societa Agricola Pietrafitta is located in San Gimignano. San Gimignano is a small hilltop town in Tuscany remarkable for its well-preserved medieval towers and forifications, which give the place an unforgettable skyline.

The farm lies between Florence and Siena. It is composed of seven farmlands surrounding the villa. The name Pietrafitta comes from the stones that were used to mark the borders of the properties. Today it represents an imaginary boundary between the old and modern, tradition and progress, a treasure hidden away in the hills of San Gimignano.

Originally Vernaccia wine was produced in Pietrafitta and for this reason its first name was “Vernaccia de Pietrafitta”. When other wineries in the San Gimignano area started producing it, the name was changed to “Vernaccia di San Gimignano”.

Vernaccia's intricate history is rooted in San Gimignano. The idyllic countryside upon which this vine grows was actually named Italy’s first DOC in 1966. Somm Secret—The 13th century marks its first written record and the grape was celebrated widely in literature, namely poems by Dante and Franseco Redi.

Producing some of Tuscany’s best white wines based on its own variety called Vernaccia, San Gimignano is a small appellation to the west of Chianti centered around the romantic village of the same name. Vernaccia produces a fruity and floral white with plenty of verve on the palate and often a fresh note of raw almond.
