Winemaker Notes

The 2008 vintage of this wine was ranked #6 on the Wine Spectator's Top 10 Wines of 2010

A deep, garnet hue provides a striking prelude to an aromatic symphony of black raspberry, vanilla and fresh-baked brioche. The palate, silky and well-balanced, weaves together freshpicked blackberry, dark red cherry and anise with floral notes. Plum and boysenberry harmonize with Darjeeling tea over the long, expressive finish supported by firm, round tannins.

Professional Ratings

  • 93
The dark plum/ruby-hued 2009 Pinot Noir Russian River exhibits dusty, earthy notes of raspberries, black cherries, cinnamon and Allspice. Medium-bodied with sweet tannins, this impressive 2009 should drink well for 4-6 years.
    90-93 points.
  • 91
Complex and layered, with loamy earth, roasted coffee, spice, sage and cedar flavors that are well-distributed and focused. The flavor themes repeat on the finish. Best from 2012 through 2020.

While the Russian River Valley is a large appellation with multiple climate zones and soil types, it is best known for cool-climate varieties, with Pinot Noir as the most celebrated. The grapes benefit from a reliable late afternoon flow of Pacific Ocean fog through the Petaluma Gap and along the Russian River Valley that ensures slow and steady ripening and the preservation of grape acidity. Today many of California’s most highly regarded Pinot Noir vineyards are in the Russian River Valley, along with its sub-appellation, Green Valley.

Historically Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs had bright red fruit and delicate earthy, mineral notes. But changes in viticultural and winemaking practices have led to stylistic changes in some of the region’s wines. Adjustments to canopy management, among other techniques, have resulted in riper fruit and bolder wines as well. These show flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cola, spice and darker, loamy earth tones, accenting traditional Pinot Noir notes of strawberry, raspberry and light cherry.
