Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The core of this Chardonnay is from Sanchietti Vineyard Pleasant Hill and Gap’s Crown, with the Sanchietti fruit adding richness and texture and the Gap’s Crown grapes providing minerality and vibrant acidity. Blended with grapes from acclaimed vineyards like Parmalee Hill, Dutton Ranch and Durell Vineyard, this wine is beautifully complex with aromas and flavors of pineapple, guava, honeydew and lime zest, as well as secondary notes of toasted almond macaroon, cinnamon and sugar cookies. On the palate, it is plush and mouthfilling, flowing to a long, layered finish.

Lively chardonnay with lots of sliced apple, pear, and lemon curd character. Full body, yet agile and vivid. Shows a caressing texture with a lime undertone. Needs some bottle age to show its full potential. Try in 2018.

The 2015 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast offers aromas of honey-drizzled peaches, poached pears, musk melon and butterscotch. Medium to full-bodied with a pleasant oiliness to the texture and plenty of butter-laced stone fruit flavors on offer, it has great harmony and persistence.

This larger production offering from the respected producer is a testament to the benefit of sourcing from multiple sites. It showcases an interesting oyster shell note, as well as robust, caramelized oak. Honey and baked apple flavors lend richness and concentration.

Patz & Hall Patz & Hall Winery Video
Patz and Hall Wine Company was founded in 1988 by Donald Patz, James Hall, Anne Moses and Heather Patz, and is dedicated to the production of hand-crafted wines. The four are long-time Napa Valley residents and wine industry professionals, with a wide variety of experiences. Patz and Hall produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines from selected vineyard sources in Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Monterey counties. The Patz and Hall method is to work closely with each of their growers to achieve a unique expression of the vineyard site and deliver wines that reflect both the site and their vision for great wine.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

A vast appellation covering Sonoma County’s Pacific coastline, the Sonoma Coast AVA runs all the way from the Mendocino County border, south to the San Pablo Bay. The region can actually be divided into two sections—the actual coastal vineyards, marked by marine soils, cool temperatures and saline ocean breezes—and the warmer, drier vineyards further inland, which are still heavily influenced by the Pacific but not quite with same intensity.

Contained within the appellation are the much smaller Fort Ross-Seaview and Petaluma Gap AVAs.

The Sonoma Coast is highly regarded for elegant Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and, increasingly, cool-climate Syrah. The wines have high acidity, moderate alcohol, firm tannin, and balanced ripeness.
