    Winemaker Notes

The French variety Sauvignon Blanc, used for producing this wine and whose origin is centred in the Loire region, was introduced by Marqués de Riscal into Rueda in 1974. Today, it forms part of the varieties authorised by the Rueda "Denominación de Origen" on account of its great adaptability to the environment and because it produces very aromatic white wines of great balance and quality. The Marqués de Riscal Sauvignon follows the same winemaking process as the Rueda Superior, with cold maceration, thereby preventing the appearance of pigments. In order to protect the primary characteristics, fermentation is carried out at a controlled temperature of between 12 and 13 ºC.

Year of above average rainfall with a total of 480 l/m2. The 311 l/m2 in autumn-winter provided enough reserves of water to withstand the long months of a remarkably dry summer. There was considerable frost on April 21 which caused damage in the lower areas of the D.O., of upto between 30-40%, depending on the area. Mild temperatures in March and April brought forward the vine´s growth cycle, with budbreak ocurring two weeks earlier than normal. Some rain during flowering led to a little coulure with the consequent reduction in the yield. Summer temperatures were not unduly hot and the harvest was brought forward to the beginning of September, nearer to usual than was foreseeable at the start of the growth cycle. Very healthy, ripe harvest of excellent quality.

Penetrating aroma of pure, ripe fruit with an immediate, persistent impact on the nose. Pale colour with topaz highlights. Very smooth on the palate as a whole with a slight touch of acidity on the tongue and overall freshness which expands on the finish.

Wines of the Herederos de Marqués de Riscal has always been a leading and pioneering company in the wine producing sector. In 1858, it became the first winery in the Rioja to produce wines following the Bordeaux method and in 1972, it was the first winery to promote the Rueda Designation of Origin, where it produced its famous Marqués de Riscal white wines. Marqués de Riscal sells its products in over 70 countries and its wines have enjoyed the highest international distinctions as well as numerous awards and mentions in the media. Showcasing design, art, gastronomy, wine and the lush landscape all combine to create a memorable sojour… The vision of Frank O. Gehry was to create a 21st century château, an icon for one of the oldest wineries in the Rioja region, Vinos de los Herederos de Marqués de Riscal that connect the historic legacy with the modern art and wine nature. The building is a composition of rectilinear prisms that float above the ground by three super columns that support the building. The building rises nine meters above the ground and crosses the underground wine store of Marqués de Riscal to support itself with the three super columns. This allows spectacular views in all levels, to see the vineyards, Elciego, and the mountains of the Sierra de Cantabria as a background. Everything is wrapped in cascades of titanium (Canopies) colored in pink, gold and silver symbolizing the reddish hues of red wine, the mesh of the wine bottle of Marqués de Riscal and the capsule of the bottle

Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.

Highly regarded for distinctive and age-worthy red wines, Rioja is Spain’s most celebrated wine region. Made up of three different sub-regions of varying elevation: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental. Wines are typically a blend of fruit from all three, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta, at the highest elevation, is considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier Rioja Oriental produce wines with deep color and higher alcohol, which can add great body and richness to a blend.

Fresh and fruity Rioja wines labeled, Joven, (meaning young) see minimal aging before release, but more serious Rioja wines undergo multiple years in oak. Crianza and Reserva styles are aged for one year in oak, and Gran Reserva at least two, but in practice this maturation period is often quite a bit longer—up to about fifteen years.

Tempranillo provides the backbone of Rioja red wines, adding complex notes of red and black fruit, leather, toast and tobacco, while Garnacha supplies body. In smaller percentages, Graciano and Mazuelo (Carignan) often serve as “seasoning” with additional flavors and aromas. These same varieties are responsible for flavorful dry rosés.

White wines, typically balancing freshness with complexity, are made mostly from crisp, fresh Viura. Some whites are blends of Viura with aromatic Malvasia, and then barrel fermented and aged to make a more ample, richer style of white.
