Winemaker Notes

Overlook is a wine that is more than the sum of its parts due to the synergy of blending. All of the individual lots and barrels in the final blend have passed through numerous tastings and approval by the winemaking staff. What eventually emerges is a wine with a generous palate feel, with ripe fruit expression; apple, pear, orange, fig, and melon, coupled with toasty, gain-like flavors, imparted from French oak and sur-lie aging.

The 2000 Overlook follows its predecessor's footsteps, impressive with its consistency of flavor and handcrafted complexity. Our winemaker has blended grapes from carefully selected vineyards from two of California's finest coastal appelations: Sonoma (86%) and Monterey (14%). The wines was barrel fermented in French oak (25% new), using indigenous yeast and went through complete malo-lactic fermentation, aged sur lie for 8 months, with gentle racking, light isinglass fining and bottled without filtration, giving the wine a well-proportioned richness and finesse that has been the benchmark of Overlook.

Landmark Vineyards was founded in 1974 in Windsor, California. In 1989, Damaris Deere Ford, became sole proprietor and relocated the winery to Sonoma Valley. Ford is a descendant of John Deere, founder of the world's largest tractor manufacturer. Landmark Vineyards is located at the base of Sugarloaf Mountain in Sonoma Valley. In 1993, world-renowned consulting enologist Helen Turley was hired to work with former winemaker, Eric Stern. Landmark Vineyard's mission is "to make great wines that enhance the joy of life." Quality and flavor begin in the vineyards. In addition to the estate vineyard, Landmark sources grapes from a range of different vineyards and those selected are the finest in the highly diverse microclimates of Sonoma County's winegrowing regions.
