Winemaker Notes

Delmoro Blanco comes from vineyards near the village of Venta del Moro, a blend of young and old vines from the indigenous Merseguera and old-vine chardonnay. Vineyards are planted on limestone-rich calcareous clay soil at an altitude of around 600 meters, with a continental climate heavily influenced by the Mediterranean Sea. Delmoro Blanco is well-balanced and exotic, with notable texture and energy, a perfect accompaniment to the incredible foods of Valencia.

Blend: 95% Merseguera, 5% Chardonnay

The new entry-level white is the 2021 Delmoro Blanco, from purchased Merseguera grapes from the zone of Utiel on clay-rich soils. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, concrete and a small portion in barrel and matured with lees for four months. It has 12% alcohol and is quite fruit-driven, a late-ripening variety that holds ripeness and keeps very good freshness, with balsamic notes reminiscent of bay leaf with a honeyed touch.

La Comarcal Javi Revert and Victor Marqués Winery Image

La Comarcal is a small project by two good friends who just happen to be two of eastern Spain’s most talented viticultors: Javi Revert and Victor Marqués. Located in the mountainous village of Venta del Moro in the Valencia D.O., La Comarcal ("The District") is a young winery founded in 2017 with the inspiration of making delicious, youthful wines—new expressions based on the old mountain vineyards of native Valencian grape varieties they farm with certified organic viticulture and native yeasts, utilizing only a judicious amount of sulfur. They focus on regenerative agriculture in every aspect of their work. From researching the best locations to replant native varieties to replace the once-dominant international varieties to working with traditional mixed-agriculture farming and planting trees, Javi and Victor are lifelong students of their natural environment with the winemaking experience to make a significant impact in their region. It shows in the energy and transparency of the project, as this winemaking duo is among the most exciting teams to watch in Spain.

La Comarcal was built on the friendship formed by Javi and Victor while working together at the influential Valencian winery Celler del Roure for over ten years. They represent the new generation from Valencia focused on regenerative farming and exceptional quality while retaining the approachability and relaxed attitude of their laid-back Mediterranean region.

The two friends are constantly exploring their Valencian region, searching for unique plots of land with stories to tell. Their philosophy is to utilize the native farming methods of Valencia to deliver clear, expressive translations of their landscape and moments shared with good food and friends. They have a particular focus on replanting the correct indigenous grape varieties in the right vineyards. Due to the region’s past commercial activity, many international grape varieties were planted in the wrong places for quality. Victor and Javier work to understand each plot of land, replanting them with the native Valencian varieties best suited to the environment.

With hundreds of white grape varieties to choose from, winemakers have the freedom to create a virtually endless assortment of blended white wines. In many European regions, strict laws are in place determining the set of varieties that may be used in white wine blends, but in the New World, experimentation is permitted and encouraged. Blending can be utilized to enhance balance or create complexity, lending different layers of flavors and aromas. For example, a variety that creates a soft and full-bodied white wine blend, like Chardonnay, would do well combined with one that is more fragrant and naturally high in acidity. Sometimes small amounts of a particular variety are added to boost color or aromatics. Blending can take place before or after fermentation, with the latter, more popular option giving more control to the winemaker over the final qualities of the wine.

The Valencia DO wine region is a non-contiguous appellation, with four distinct subzones, surrounding the area beyond Valencia’s capital city. Winemaking in the northern part of this region is dominated by old growing areas surrounding the city. The region was established in 1957.

Historically, bulk wine has been the focal point of the region and cooperatives still handle 85% of total production today. However, winemakers are trying to steadily move away from this and focus more on producing quality wine thanks to a growing group of local innovative winemakers. More importance is being placed on older vines of indigenous (or historic) varieties planted at higher altitudes, which range from 820 - 3,600 feet.

There is growing excitement about the wines being produced from black grapes such as Monastrell, as well as late-ripening white grapes such as Merseguera. The most planted grape, Moscatel de Alejandría, has its own subzone centered around the production of sweet, fortified liqueur wines, called locally Mistela de Moscatel. The region's reds, rosés and whites actually all include dessert wines, each with their own wine-making traditions.
