Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The Shiraz was sourced from old vineyards in the Krondorf, Marananga and Ebenezer regions, Grenache from old bush vines in the Stockwell and Krondorf regions and Mourvedre from oldbush vines, the oldest over 100 years old in the Light Pass and Krondorf regions. A true reflection of Barossa's soil and climate, Plexus expresses complex aromas and flavors combining red anddark fruits with savory notes. The palate is framed by youthful fine tannins and subtle savory French oak adds to the structure and complexity.

Blend: 52% Shiraz, 29% Grenache, 19% Mourvedre

Professional Ratings

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2010 Plexus Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvedre is a blend of Shiraz 52%, Grenache 29% and Mourvedre 19%. This wine opens with notes of blackberry preserves, blueberry compote and warm black plums over suggestions of vanilla, cinnamon toast, anise, espresso and mandarin peel. Full-bodied and generously fruited with warm black berry and spice flavors plus a touch of oak, it has a good backbone of medium to firm finely-grained tannins and just enough acid to balance through the long finish. It’s delicious now but should improve with 2-3 years in bottle and drink well to 2022+. 92+

This supple, generous red offers juicy cherry, tobacco and cream flavors, finishing with crisp tannins as the flavors linger effortlessly. Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre.

John Duval, Australia
John Duval John Duval at Eden Valley Vineyard Winery Image

John Duval is one of Australia's most highly regarded winemakers. Raised on a South Australian farm with three generations of grape growers before him, his vinous path was fated. However, it was during his 28-year tenure with Penfolds that his passion for the famed Barossa Valley flourished. As Chief Winemaker and custodian of Australia's most famous wine, Grange, he was instrumental in establishing Penfolds as one of the world's great wineries. His accolades include being named UK Wine and Spirit Competition's International Winemaker of the Year, Red Winemaker of the Year (twice) and receiving Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year award. In 2003, John embarked on his own label, John Duval Wines, inspired by the best of the Barossa Valley's low-yielding, old vine vineyards. With a deft touch he crafts intense wines that are as complex and distinctive as the diverse terroir of his treasured Barossa Valley.
