Winemaker Notes

A deep ruby-black color with purple hints. On the nose, blackcurrant, dark cherries, and blackberries, with spices, licorice, and cocoa. A very rich mouthfeel with flavors of black fruit, jam, vanilla, spice and mineral notes. Excellent with game, beef, lamb, barbecue foods, roasted pork and a variety of other hearty dishes.

Wine Enthusiast
Terres Brulées, or burnt earth, aptly describes the nose on this enticingly smoky, singed Syrah. Vinified from fully destemmed grapes and matured 21 months in oak (10% new), it has joyously youthful black-cherry and cassis flavors. Kissed by vanilla and framed in silky tannins, it's a fresh-footed expression of Cornas that's drinking at peak now through 2028.
WS 93
Wine Spectator

Sleek and focused, with a racy core of red currant and bitter cherry coulis framed with a floral edge, and carried by a pure, mouthwatering mineral streak in the end. Best from 2023.

Laure Colombo builds this cuvée from an array of estate parcels. Her 2018 is lush, smooth and immediately appealing, a fountain of purple-plum fruit pouring from its center. Notes of lilacs and red raspberry keep it buoyant, while chocolatey tannins hold it firm. It’s ready to enjoy, though it wouldn’t be a bad idea to forget a few bottles in the cellar.

Innovation, passion and dedication are what drive Jean-Luc and Anne Colombo, whose contributions to Rhône Valley winemaking has remained unparalleled since 1984. Colombo’s innovative approach in the northern appellation of Cornas was nothing short of revolutionary; his expressive, character-driven wines have helped breath new life into this highly prestigious and acclaimed appellation.

Jean-Luc, Anne and their daughter Laure, now head winemaker, continue to ensure the production of fine wines of typicity from major appellations of the Rhône Valley, as well as the Languedoc and Provence, while maintaining sustainable farming practices.

Distinguished as a fine Syrah producing zone since the 18th century, Cornas, like Cote Rotie, is made up of vineyards covering steep and hard-to-work, granite terraces. As a result the region’s wines fell out of favor during the mid 20th century when the global market was more focused on bulk wines and vineyards that yielded high quantities. It wasn’t until the 1980s when a group of energetic young winemakers reestablished the integrity of these precipitous terraces and also began making an ultra-modern style of Syrah. The new style didn’t need a decade before it was drinkable and could reach the consumer faster than the region’s traditional wines. Given the new quality coming out of the zone, its popularity once again soared and today a good Cornas can easily challenge many of those from Hermitage. Characteristics of Syrah from Cornas include teeth-staining flavors of blackberry jam, plum, pepper, violets, smoked game, charcoal, chalk dust and smoke.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”
