Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Intense ruby red. Full and persistent with lifted floral notes, followed by berry fruits and a hint of forest floor. Typical Sangiovese aromas, redolent of Montalcino. Warm, dry, generous and well-balanced. Bright, fresh acidity with depth and Montalcino character. Great length and persistence.

Il Palazzone's NV Rosso del Palazzone is a pure expression of Sangiovese with 90% of the fruit from the 2016 vintage and 10% from the much hotter and riper 2017 vintage. This interesting blend of vintages offers the focus and definition of the 2016 season with some of the darker and jammy tones of 2017, but these contrasting profiles have been nicely ironed out and balanced. Enjoy it with a pappardelle and ragù.

Il Palazzone was founded in the 1980s. The estate has three separate vineyards in three distinct areas of Montalcino. The highest elevation vineyard, Le Due Porte, is located next to the cellar, very close to the town of Montalcino. Two older vineyards are near Castelnuovo dell’Abate. In total we have 5 hectares/ 12 acres under vine, all Sangiovese.

Each vineyard is tended separately and picked, vinified and aged alone. The extraordinary variety of terroir and microclimate result in having three complimentary aspects of Montalcino represented in the final Brunello which is blended across the three vineyards.

Legendary in Italy for its Renaissance art and striking landscape, Tuscany is also home to many of the country’s best red wines. Sangiovese reigns supreme here, as either the single varietal, or a dominant player, in almost all of Tuscany’s best.

A remarkable Chianti, named for its region of origin, will have a bright acidity, supple tannins and plenty of cherry fruit character. From the hills and valleys surrounding the medieval village of Montalcino, come the distinguished and age-worthy wines based on Brunello (Sangiovese). Earning global acclaim since the 1970s, the Tuscan Blends are composed solely of international grape varieties or a mix of international and Sangiovese. The wine called Vine Nobile di Montepulciano, composed of Prognolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and is recognized both for finesse and power.
