Winemaker Notes

Deep crimson with magenta hues. Fragrant aromas of red currant, raspberry, blueberry and plum with spicy lifts of bay leaf, sage, black pepper and nutmeg. The juicy supple palate is rich and textured with spicy berry fruits, and well-balanced by fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins for a long, elegant finish.

Blend: 72% Shiraz, 13% Grenache, 12% Mataro, 3% Viognier

Professional Ratings

  • 94

In Henschke’s renowned style, this is a luscious-yet-elegant and spice-filled bottling. Layers of aromas reveal themselves, from plump plum and black currant to cherry cola, bay leaf, green peppercorn, earthy spice and dusty rose. Full figured, it’s sculpted with savory tannins, the fresh acidity propping up plush purple and black fruit

A blend of shiraz, grenache, mataro and viognier, this has a wealth of rich, darker-toned fruit, as well as raspberry, pepper and fragrant, foresty notes. The palate is supple, fleshy and flavorsome with such open-knit structure and an attractive mix of raspberries and blackberries.
  • 91

Boasts bright, succulent raspberry, apricot and maraschino cherry flavors on a sleek frame, with white pepper, cedar and vanilla bean details. Reveals warm baking spice notes on the finish. Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro and Viognier.

  • 90

Henschke's entry-level red in the US market is the 2020 Henry's Seven, a blend of 72% Shiraz (co-fermented with 3% Viognier), 13% Grenache and 12% Mataro (Mourvedre). It sees just 5% new oak, with the balance aged in older hogsheads. Hints of asphalt and black olives appear on the nose, backed by blueberries, raspberries and black cherries, while the medium to full-bodied palate is supple, marked by soft, almost-powdery tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish. Best After 2022

With bold fruit flavors and accents of sweet spice, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre form the base of the classic Rhône Red Blend, while Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise often come in to play. Though they originated from France’s southern Rhône Valley, with some creative interpretation, Rhône blends have also become popular in other countries. Somm Secret—Putting their own local spin on the Rhône Red Blend, those from Priorat often include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In California, it is not uncommon to see Petite Sirah make an appearance.

The Barossa Zone encompasses the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley. Some of the oldest vines in Australia can be found here.

Barossa Valley of course is the most important and famous wine growing region in all of Australia where 140+ year-old, dry-farmed Shiraz vines still produce inky, purple and dense juice for some of Australia's best wines.

In the cooler, wetter Eden Valley sub-region, the Hill of Grace vineyard is home to famous Shiraz vines from the 1800s but the region produces also some of Australia’s very best and age-worthy Rieslings.
