Winemaker Notes
The 2019 Freeman Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is the one wine out of their six 2019 Pinots that benefits the most from aeration. When you first open it, the aromas are very earthy, with some cool climate reduction, often found in Burgundy and Oregon. After several hours in a decanter, the bright berry scents of the Sonoma Coast begin to emerge and combine beautifully with the more savory elements. The palate has an abundance of crunchy, ripe fruit with brilliant acidity and soft tannins. With a finish that goes on and on, expect this to be at its best between 2021 and 2030.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Pale ruby, the 2019 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast has a bright, open nose of wild red and black berries, orange peel, tea leaves and earth with meaty, savory undertones. The palate is softly framed, fresh and open, with intense juicy berry fruits and a long, uplifted finish. This comes mainly from the Yu-ki vineyard this vintage.

James Suckling
Ripe strawberry, toasted thyme and cardamom on the nose. Medium-to full-bodied with good depth of flavor. Tight tannins carry punchy, bright red and black fruit and an earthier note pushes through toward the end. Really fresh. Drink or hold.

The Sonoma Coast AVA is large in area but, not counting overlapping regions like Russian River Valley, only has a few thousand acres of grapevines—and it’s no wonder. Much of the region is rugged and not easily accessible. Its proximity to the Pacific Ocean’s fog and cool breezes limits the varieties that can be cultivated, but it proves to be an ideal environment for high quality Pinot Noir.
Since fog is a frequent fact of life here, as are heavy marine layers that sometimes bring rain, the best vineyards are wisely planted above the fog line, on picturesque ridges that capture enough sun to provide even ripening. That, with the overnight drop in temperature that reliably preserves acidity, results in fine expressions of Pinot Noir that often receive tremendous critic and consumer praise alike, and are often in high demand.
