Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The 2017 vintage of Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve captivates with aromas reminiscent of red fruits such as cherries and raspberries. Further back some nice notes of cocoa and clove appear, culminating with a slight oral hint that reminds of violets. Aligned with what is perceived on the nose, the palate offers cherries, raspberries and cassis flavors, plus the sweet notes of cocoa and clove. It is a generous wine, with good tension and juiciness that provide freshness, framed by mature tannins that marvelously surround the mouth, along with a long and very pleasant persistence.

Blend: 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Malbec, 8% Carmenere, 7% Petit Verdot, 6% Cabernet Franc

Currants, flowers, sandalwood and crushed stone. Some cocoa. Medium to full body and linear, tight tannins. Bright and fresh. Energetic. Shows serious tension and focus. Excellent finish. Drink after 2022.

The Errazuriz Estate was founded in 1870 by Don Maximiano Errazuriz and this is the 150th anniversary bottling of the wine named in his honour. A Bordeaux-inspired blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (67%), Malbec (12%), Carmenere (8%), Petit Verdot (7%) and Cabernet Franc (6%). Winemaker Francisco Baettig describes the 2017 as 'the freshest Don Maximiano that we've made in modern times'. Rich black cherry and blackberry aromas are edged in vanilla, spice and chocolate with a whisper of florality. Careful oak management (22 months in French oak, 72% new) is reflected in a balanced palate, with mature, rounded tannins; the cassis, cherry and raspberry fruit is overlaid with cocoa, leather and spice notes, buoyed with notable freshness.

Based on 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Malbec, and the rest Carménère, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Don Maximiano Founder's Reserve offers up a classic Bordeaux-like nose of darker currants and cassis as well as lead pencil, spicy oak, and tobacco. This carries to a medium-bodied, beautifully balanced, elegant Cabernet with good concentration, ripe yet savory tannins, and outstanding length.

I like the austerity of the 2017 Don Maximiano Founder's Reserve—it's more reserved than the 2016, more discrete and less aromatic, with a lot of power on the palate. 2017 is a structured vintage, and the challenge was to find elegance, freshness and balance, as the weather was warm and dry. It's a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Malbec, 8% Carmenere, 7% Petit Verdot and 6% Cabernet Franc—a classical Chilean Bordeaux blend—with notes of black fruit, cassis and blackberry, serious and with better-integrated oak. They are very careful with the use of oak, using barrels that mark the wine less, especially in warm vintages, and using fewer new barrels. The wine has structure and tannin but also has the juiciness to balance it all.

Patented Chilean aromas of herbas, blackberry and dark plum are spicy and feature a fair amount of oak and related wood smoke. On the palate, this Cabernet Sauvignon-driven blend is juicy and high in energy. Plum, currant and wild berry flavors maintain a sense of freshness on the finish. Overall, this is showy and complex. Best from 2022 to 2030. Cellar Selection.

Errazuriz Winery Video

Errázuriz is recognized as perhaps the single top-quality producer of Chilean wines, within recent years. Eduardo Chadwick, President, was named Decanter Man of the Year 2018, and the winery was awarded Best Chilean Winery 2017 by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. As an estate winery, Errázuriz strives to produce the finest wines by controlling every stage of the winemaking process, from grape growing in the Aconcagua, Casablanca and Curico valleys, to winemaking with the most natural techniques. An emphasis is placed on the delicate handling of the wines, with the aim of producing wines of elegance and complexity. It is this dynamism and passion for wine that has made Errázuriz such an internationally respected producer of quality wines.

Don Maximiano Errazuriz founded Viña Errazuriz in 1870 in the Aconcagua Valley, north of Santiago. This valley has cool, rainy winters, hot, dry summers and moist Pacific Ocean breezes--ideal for growing grapes. Don Maximiano sent for the finest clones from France and with tenacity and perseverance transformed this barren land into a world-class vineyard. Today, the tradition of quality lives on with Don Maximiano's descendant, Eduardo Chadwick--the fifth generation of his family to be involved in the wine business. Eduardo has overseen the modernization of the winemaking technology at this historic estate while maintaining a distinct identity for its wines, dedicated to producing estate grown wines of superior quality.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

The Aconcagua River runs east from the charming costal town of Valparaiso and bisects the land creating the valley after which it was named. While alluvial soils predominate the Aconcagua Valey along its river throughout, its east-west flow creates drastically different conditions on each of its ends. Its western, seaside vineyards, with clay and stony soils upon gently rolling hills, produce cool-climate varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Its inner region is one of Chile’s hottest and produces some of its best red wines. Panquehue in the inner Aconcagua is the site of Chile’s first Syrah vines, planted in 1993.
