    Winemaker Notes

The deep well drained alluvial soils with rounded galet stones, produces a wine with orchard fruits and lemon curd flavors balanced by a vein of mineralty and bright acidity. They are foot tread to extract phenolics from the skins followed by fermentation and aging in neutral french oak barrels.

Many know Wells Guthrie as the founder of Copain Wines, where he was an early advocate for the move away from big wines for big scores and a proponent for less ripeness and more balance. Having run his course at Copain Wines, Wells moved on a few years ago and has found a new home, quite literally, in the hills above Boonville in the Anderson Valley. With this new project, Wells comes full circle - back to the examples he first saw while staging with vignerons in Europe, before his U.S. winemaking journey began. While he will continue to make a number of single vineyard wines from the Anderson Valley from vineyards he has worked with for over a decade and knows intimately – the focus of the project will be the home estate. There are currently 7 acres of vines on a 40 acre property at 1200 feet above sea level. The vineyards are completely surrounded by natural forests and biodiversity. The farming is, of course, organic and the winemaking is gentle and simple with the only addition being a tiny bit of SO2. Wells and his family have made this property their home. He can see the vines from the kitchen table. He feels the same sun and breathes the same air and that connection with the vines is everything for Wells, as it is for any tried and true vigneron.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

Surrounded by redwood forests and often blanketed in chilly, ocean fog, the Anderson Valley is one of California’s most picturesque appellations. During the growing season, moist, cool, late afternoon air flows in from the Pacific Ocean along the Navarro River and over the valley's golden, oak-studded hills. High and low temperatures can vary as much as 40 or 50 degrees within a single day, allowing for slow and gentle ripening of grapes, which will in turn create elegantly balanced wines.

The Anderson Valley is best known for Pinot Noir made in a range of styles from delicate and floral to powerful and concentrated. Chardonnay also shines here, and both varieties are often utilized for the production of some of California’s best traditional method sparkling wines. The region also draws inspiration from Alsace and produces excellent Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris.
