Winemaker Notes

Complexity never tasted so good. This multi-layered cuvee stands out for its incredible purity of fruit, penetrating mineral expression and silky, fine-grained texture. A wine of both grace and precision.

Many of the vines were planted shortly after the Second World war, but the lower part of the vineyard dates back to 1928. Low yields therefore, all destemmed, with 50% new oak. Fine fresh mid purple. This gorgeous Lavaux St-Jacques has a brilliant bouquet, with sensual raspberry fruit that retains subtle nuances. So harmonious, the sweet delicious fruit is backed by really good grip. Hard to do better than this.

So complete, it’s hard to believe that this isn’t a Grand Cru. Stunning concentration, very fine tannins and lovely freshness at the long, intensely mineral finish. So much drive and elegance! Drink or hold.

There is lovely purity to the super-fresh and quite floral nose of dark currants, game and newly turned earth that displays an herbal tea top note. The almost painfully intense and strikingly energetic mineral-inflected middle weight plus flavors are tautly muscular though not really rustic while displaying excellent persistence on the youthfully austere and very firmly structured finish. This is terrific and worth searching out.

Domaine Tawse, France
Domaine Tawse straddles the line between tradition and innovation, a stance both Old World and New World in origin. Native Quebecois Pascal Marchand seeks to express terroir like the Burgundian he has become over the last three decades, while also embodying his New World roots, where gumption, hard work, and forward-thinking foster change. Joined by fellow Canadian Moray Tawse, this duo is at the forefront of a new wave of vignerons, embracing organic and biodynamic farming practices while rejecting draconian dogma in the vineyard or cellar. Since 2010, Moray Tawse and Pascal Marchand have acquired their own village, premier cru, and grand cru parcels in the Côte d'Or, as well as purchasing Gevrey-Chambertin’s famous Domaine Maume in 2012. Currently, the estate wines of Domaine Maume are labeled as "Maume by Domaine Tawse", however eventually the wines will be solely under the Domaine Tawse label. Burgundy’s Domaine Maume has long been celebrated by serious collectors for its old-vine, séléction massale plantings in Gevrey-Chambertin’s finest village, premier cru and grand cru vineyards, and this foundation for a nascent estate is no doubt the envy of many a vigneron in the region. These two friends and wine legends, along with winemaker stars Mark Fincham (formerly Domaine du Pegau) and Thomas Dinel (formerly Domaine Dujac), are eager to continue the domaine’s renaissance and evolution. They have converted all the vineyards they’ve acquired to organic and biodynamic farming methods, going as far as to horse plow many of the estate vineyards. Their knowledge of their vineyard sites is deeply intimate, and they seek to understand every plot to its very core. Preferring, slow, gentle, traditional vinifications that reflect the qualities of the terroir and conditions of the vintage more than following a set recipe, they have been able to create wines that are intense, memorable, complex yet accessible, and ethereal yet incredibly precise.

Gevrey-Chambertin Wine

Cote de Nuits, Burgundy

View all products

This small village is home to the Grands Crus in the farthest northerly stretches of Côte de Nuits and is famous for some of the deepest and firmest Burgundian Pinot Noir.

Gevrey boasts nine Grands Crus, the best of which are arguably Le Chambertin and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze. As with all of the fragmented vineyards of Burgundy, it isn’t easy to differentiate between the two, which are situated adjacent with Clos de Bèze slightly further up the hill than Le Chambertin. Clos de Bèze has a shallower soil and if you’re really counting, may produce wines less intense but more likely to charm. Some compare Le Chambertin in both power and plentitude only to the prized Romanée-Conti Grand Cru farther south in Vosne-Romanée.

Two other Grands Crus vineyards, Mazis-Chambertin (also written Mazy-) and Latricières-Chambertin command almost as much regard as Le Chambertin and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze. The upper part of Mazy, called Les Mazis Haut is the best and Latricières-Chambertin offers an abundance of juicy fruit and a silky texture in the warmer vintages.

Other Grands Crus are Ruchottes-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, Mazoyères-Chambertin, Griotte-Chambertin and Chapelle-Chambertin.

The most respected Pinot Noir wines from Gevrey-Chambertin are robust and powerful but at the same time, velvety and expressive: black fruit, black liquorice and chocolate come into play. After some time in the bottle, the wines are harmonious with bright and sometimes candied fruit, and aromas of musk, truffle and forest floor. These have staying power.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”
