Domaine de la Monette Roelof Ligtmans & Marlon Steine Winery Image
Roelof Ligtmans & Marlon Steine are the Dutch couple behind Domaine de la Monette, and most passionate about Burgundian wines. They acquired this domaine in 2007 after obtaining their diplomas from the "Lycée Viticole de Beaune". Their goal has been to create one of the most reputable wineries in Mercurey all while respecting the land and fruit grown on their vineyards. Domaine de la Monette creates wines with with organic vineyard and winemaking techniques, using hands-off approaches both with the vines and in the cellar. Moreover, in 2010, they remodeled their facilities with a new solar panel rooftop that covers the energy use of their winery. Throughout the years, they have remained an organic producing domaine, and continue to grow.

A native but unique white grape to Burgundy, Aligoté is a light bodied white that often ends up unfairly lost in Chardonnay’s shadow. In Côte Chalonnaise, in a quaint village named Bouzeron, just south of the Côte de Beaune, Aligoté has its very own appellation where yields are limited in order to enhance flavors, acidity and overall quality. Somm Secret—Curiously, the famous producer, Domaine Ponsot, bottles a 100% Aligoté from its Premier Cru in Morey-Ste-Denis, Les Monts Luisants, made from Aligoté vines planted in 1911.

Beloved for its deep and flavorful reds made of Pinot Noir, Mercurey is the largest and most important village in the Côte Chalonnaise of Burgundy with most of its vineyards tucked away in hillsides or stretched along the aptly-named “Golden Valley.” This valley, sheltered from the moist and cool air that funnels along at lower elevations, is ideal for ripening Pinot noir.

Mercurey follows strict yield laws, similar to those at the Côte d’Or village level, promoting the development of deep, full, concentrated and age-worthy Pinot noirs. In their youth, a chewy and rich structure supports flavors of ripe strawberry, raspberry and cherry. Age brings notes of underbrush, tobacco and cocoa.

While Pinot Noir claims the majority of Mercurey vineyard acreage, Chardonnay does grow here and produces uniqely floral and spicey scented white wines.
