Winemaker Notes

This is an atypical cuvee in terms of its complexity of aromas -- deep spice, black fruit flavors and chocolate notes are overlaid with leather and a wild complexity.

A masterpiece of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The fruit power leads this wine and lends that effortless sense of power and length that only old vines can muster. Oak adds spice but the blood plum and dark cherry fruits take center stage here. Best from 2020.

Coming all from the Brusquières lieu-dit located in the northern part of My favorite of the multiple cuvées was the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Hautes Brusquieres Cuvee Speciale. It's the most floral and expressive of the Charbonnière 2015s, with scents of garrigue and violets accenting raspberry and cherry fruit. Full-bodied yet supple, it comes to a finely focused, elegant and lingering finish with no apparent heat. It should drink well for up to 15 years.

Gorgeous, with red currant, fig, boysenberry and blackberry paste flavors that run along in unison, while tightly focused graphite, oolong tea and singed anise hints run underneath. Drips with fruit but has energy and persistence, with a mineral echo adding cut on the finish. Grenache, Syrah and Counoise. Drink now through 2035.

A 60/40 blend of Grenache and Syrah, the 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Hautes Brusquières reveals a medium ruby color as well as ample notes of strawberries, dried garrigue, and dried flowers. It's medium to full-bodied, elegant and silky on the palate, with nicely integrated acidity. It's elegant and charming, yet not one of the top vintages for this cuvée.

It was in 1912 that Eugene Maret bought Domaine de la Charbonniere as a gift for his wife who was a native of Chateauneuf and the daughter of a winemaker. Their son Fernand Maret inherited a part of the Domaine and enlarged it upon the birth of his son Michel.

Today Michel Maret had over 16 hectares of vineyards located in the high plateaux of Les Brusquieres and La Crau both covered with the famous cailloux roulets and at Mourre des Perdix, sandy soil dotted with larger stones.

The passion and know-how of the winemaker, handpicking of the fruit, and careful sorting at the winery enable Michel Maret to optimize all the promise of a great terrior.

The vinification at the Domaine follows the classic style: no destemming, and three weeks fermentation in stainless steel vats, after which the wine is aged in large oak fourdes for 12-18 months.
