Winemaker Notes

This high altitude, single site Syrah from the original sector of Saint-Joseph shows aromas of black raspberry, cassis, and a tinge of white pepper. The palate is silky and lush with notes of wild raspberry, mulberry, black currant, and a hint of bacon fat. A beam of acidity adds freshness and provides balance to this deliciously seductive Syrah.

Lots of black and blue fruits, rare steak, spring flowers, and ground pepper all define the 2019 Saint Joseph L'Olivaie, and this beauty is medium to full-bodied, with a layered, gorgeous texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's another brilliant Saint-Joseph from this estate that's going to benefit from just 3-5 years of bottle age and shine for over a decade.

Cedar accents cherry-vanilla aromas in the 2019 Saint Joseph l'Olivaie. Adding notes of blackberry and licorice, this is full-bodied, plush and expansive on the palate, with a long, velvety finish. While some may object to the overt barrel influence, this is a hedonistic red for drinking over the next decade or so, with potential for further improvement over the years. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes.

Ripe, juicy and fresh, with dark plum and blackberry notes pumping along, energized by a licorice root streak and a flash of roasted applewood through the finish. Drink now.

Domaine Coursodon, France
Jérôme Coursodon, with his father Pierre alongside, produces a stunning range of red and whites from the historic village of Mauves in the original sector of Saint-Joseph. When the Saint-Joseph appellation was established in 1956, it consisted of six communes (Mauves, Glun, Tournon, St. Jean-de-Muzols, Vion, and Lemps), all dramatically steep slopes directly across the Rhône river from Hermitage, sharing the granite soil that makes up the terroir of the western “Les Bessards” section of that famous hill. The Coursodon family has true roots farming the granite in and around Mauves back to the mid 1800’s and Jerome’s grandfather Gustav was one of the leaders of Domaine bottling and organizing the St. Joseph appellation in the 1950’s. In 1968 the appellation expanded from the original six communes to twenty communes, stretching from Condrieu to Cornas. The new communes did not share the steep granitic slopes that made up the original six villages, instead consisting of a variety soil types and inclines. From their prized vineyards, all on the granite slopes in and around Mauves, the Coursodons produce wines of incredible complexity, depth, minerality, and age-ability that can compete with the best from Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”

Spanning the longest stretch of river in the northern Rhône—from Condrieu in the north, to Cornas in the south—the heart of St.-Joseph lies directly across the Rhône River from Hermitage. While its soils are basically the same as Hermitage: granite, supplemented by sand and gravel, its east facing slope receives less sunlight than Hermitage, which causes less overall berry ripening on its Syrah vines. However, some of the best of them can rival any fine expression of Hermitage, Cote-Rotie or Cornas with concentrated black fruits, dark spices, crushed rock and violets. A general advantage of the region is that its Syrahs typically don’t need as much time in the bottle compared to a Cote-Rotie or Hermitage and are much easier on the bank account!

A textbook St.-Joseph red is firm with a core of minerality that is enhanced by savory and peppery qualities. Aromas and flavors of smoke, olives, herbs, and violets are common; its wines are dense in red and black fruit.

St.-Joseph is also a source of fine northern Rhône white wine. Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne grow well here and can be blended or made into single varietal wines. St.-Joseph whites are full and silky with citrus, pear and pineapple flavors and a rich bouquet reminiscent of honeysuckle, toasted nuts, spice and caramel.
