Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Looking into the glass you are captivated by the dark ruby color, edged with a bright ring of purple, in the 2018 Napa Valley Cabernet. Nuanced aromas of fig, Luxardo cherry, black currant & lavender are accompanied by notes of toasty oak with every swirl. Each sip reveals complex layers of dark fruit, tobacco, cranberry and anise. The tannins are delicate and lingering, carrying flavors of chocolate and orange rind for a lengthy finish.

Blend: 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot

Professional Ratings

Aromas of blackcurrants, tobacco leaf and graphite. Full-bodied with fine, silky tannins. Opulent and rounded on the palate with very good intensity and balance. Steady and driven with depth and complexity from the array of black fruit and spices.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is a medium to full-bodied, pretty, seamless, incredibly elegant 2018 that shows the style and quality of this great vintage to a T. Giving up notes of red and black fruits, violets, spicy oak, and dried herbs, it brings solid ripeness as well as a balanced, layered, focused mouthfeel. It should keep for 10-12 years.
  • 92

This densely layered, well concentrated wine emphasizes cocoa, dark chocolate and dried blueberry flavors that are firmly wrapped in fine-grained tannins. Expect it to mellow and gain more complexity with time. Best from 2028.

Mike Davis has a long and fond association with the Napa Valley. Growing up in San Mateo County just south of San Francisco, his family spent summer vacations at the Napa Valley Ranch Club. Davis Estates is the culmination of a life long dream. Here the vision is carved from this historic site as an estate winery focused on wines of the highest pedigree.

We are intricately involved in the fabric of day-to-day operations and, together with our world-class team, are committed to building a sustainable property while crafting premiere Napa Valley wines to be enjoyed today and for generations to come.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
