Winemaker Notes

Clos des Epeneaux is one of the 10 largest premier or grand cru monopolies of the Côte de Beaune and Cote de Nuits. Although situated in the heart of the Grands and Petits Epeneaux, this parcel has a fairly different geology from its neighbors. Both powerful and refined, the resulting wines are the quintessence of what Pinot Noir can express. The hint of spices is also characteristic of Clos des Epeneaux.

As usual, I sampled the various constituents of the cuvée before tasting a representative blend of the 2018 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux, and as ever, the whole is superior to the sum of the parts. Wafting from the glass with a deep bouquet of raspberries, cherries, peonies, spices, orange rind, cassis, woodsmoke and espresso roast, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, its lively and concentrated core of fruit framed by rich structuring tannins, concluding with a long and sapid finish. This promises to number among the Côte de Beaune's wines of the vintage, and it will be well worth seeking out.

Comte Armand
Comte Armand Les Domaine des Epeneaux, France
The "Domaine des Epeneaux" owes its name to The "Clos des Epeneaux", somptuous piece of land of five hectares acquired by Nicolas Marey, in the late of the XVIIIth century and early of the XIXth. In 1828, The "Clos des Epeneaux" and its building, located in the center of Pommard and known under Fief Rancy's name, where there and then included in the estate of Count Armand's family. The Domaine remained as it was until to 1994, when it was expanded to vines in Volnay, then with plots of Auxey-Duresses. Actually, Le Domaine des Epeneaux stretches out over a total surface of 7,5 hectares and developes wines which will be, for every one, the expression of its "terroir".
