Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Aromas of dark fruits – cassis, blackberries, plums - are followed by an elegant concentration. Its ripe fruit flavors are complemented by notes of licorice and a hint of leather on the nose, its supple, velvety texture is supported by a fine tannic structure, a pure expression of Bordeaux breed and finesse.

This wine comes from a 24-acre estate in the northern Haut-Médoc, close to Saint-Estèphe. Its rich tannins are prominent yet balanced by the dense, ripe black fruits. With 55% Merlot in the blend, it is bold and opulent in character. Drink from 2023.

Chateau Maurac, France
The Haut-Medoc is the southeastern part of the Medoc, and is one of the most prestigious wine regions in the world. For this is Bordeaux's famed "left bank," where many of Bordeaux's finest chateaux are located. Within the Haut-Médoc are the famous communes of Margaux, St. Julien, Pauillac and St. Estephe, home of Bordeaux's most elite vineyards. In addition to the elites, the appellation Haut-Medoc refers to the many fine wines from vineyards bordering or surrounding these renowned villages. They are classic expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that have made Bordeaux wine famous for centuries.

Winemaker and vineyard manager Claude Gaudin works with a number of chateaux in the region, and one of the best is Chateau Maurac. This beautiful estate is situated just past the boundary of St. Estephe, near such well-known neighbors as Chateau Sociando-Mallet and Chateau Charmail.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.

While it claims the same basic landscape as the Medoc—only every so slightly elevated above river level—the Haut Medoc is home to all of the magnificent chateaux of the Left Bank of Bordeaux, creating no lack of beautiful sites to see.

These chateaux, residing over the classed-growth cru in the villages of Margaux, Moulis, Listrac, St-Julien, Pauillac and St. Estephe are within the Haut Medoc appellation. Though within the confines of these villages, any classed-growth chateaux will most certainly claim village or cru status on their wine labels.

Interestingly, some classed-growth cru of the Haut Medoc fall outside of these more famous villages and can certainly be a source of some of the best values in Bordeaux. Deep in color, and concentrated in ripe fruit and tannins, these wines (typically Cabernet Sauvignon-based) often prove the same aging potential of the village classed-growths. Among these, the highest ranked chateaux are Chateau La Lagune and Chateau Cantemerle.
