Winemaker Notes

The Château Bourgneuf vineyard, contiguous to Trotanoy, is situated on the slope of the Pomerol plateau. Its geographical location allows for a maximum of sunlight. This privileged location, together with the nature of its soil, represents essential factors in its quality. Although the slopes are gentle ones, one may consider that the Bourgneuf vineyard is situated on a slope with a South-East/North-West axis.

This association of gravel on clay and pure clay confers upon our wines their complexity, finesse and strength. The planted grape variety proportions at Bourgneuf consist of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. On the soils of Pomerol, the Merlot finds the perfect conditions for its fullest expression.

Blue fruits with intense violets and some black olives on the nose. Full-bodied with polished tannins that melt into the wine. Super finish. So fine. Gorgeous.

The 22-acre vineyard is now producing some very fine wines. This latest vintage shows power as well as the luxury of ripe black Merlot. With richness assured, the wine's structure guarantees aging. Barrel Sample: 93-95

Gorgeous nose, so expressive with tobacco, dark chocolate, blackcurrants and roses. Ripe and juicy, this has a lovely energy to it, but also quite a mouthcoating tannic frame, fine but firm, well integrated but definitely present and giving the focus right now while the plum, fig, pomegranate and black cherry flavours slowly expand outwards. This has a glamour to it, a shiny side, while still being relatively knitted down. I love the juicy core, it’s so bright and vibrant, but it is being overshadowed by the tannins and the almost dry, cedar edges that linger on the tongue, giving a sharpness and bitterness. Lovely complexity though with nuance and the detail. Well delivered with polish but needs more time.

Coming from a mix of gravel and clay soils and based on 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Château Bourgneuf has closed down considerably since I tasted it out of barrel. It offers a firmer, more focused, structured style that needs lots of air to show at its best. Ripe black fruits, spicy oak, graphite, and smoked tobacco define the bouquet, and it's tight and backward on the palate, with good extract and length. Hide bottles for 4-5 years, at which point it will evolve nicely for 15 years. Tasted twice.

Friendly and open up front, with kirsch, plum gelée and blackberry mixed with wood spice, dark tobacco and savory notes, which add a chunky feel to the finish. Shows good energy, though, and is an admirable effort in the vintage. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2024 through 2034.

Chateau Bourgneuf, France
Chateau Bourgneuf Winery Image
The Vayron family inherited Chateau Bourgneuf in the 70's, a veritable jewel in the heart of Pomerol, and they have become the transmitters of a unique place and its history.

This spot has left its mark on them during 40 years of their careful attention, vigilance and care so as “to give birth to a juice that is the most pure and most powerful” from this earth that is labored and loved. To seek this wine, that is the profound expression of the meeting between the soil and the personality, is to seek creation.

Frederique and her parents work together with a sense of quality and respect for the identity of this exceptional place in mind. Their collaboration is a permanent and evolving exchange between her parents experience and her personal and contemporary approach to the winemaking trade.
