Winemaker Notes

Bright red and garnet with a rim turning to brick showing its extended aging in barrel and bottle. Complex aromas from its development and aging, mature ripe black fruit, and vanilla and cinnamon spice, with a deep mineral core. Velvety smooth, harmonious with a fresh finish.

Great match for roast meats, foie, game, aged or even blue cheeses.

Blend: 85%Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, 5% Mazuelo

The 2010 harvest will go down as one of Rioja's greats, and that means wines like this $25 Gran Reserva can be excellent and affordable. It has a nose of mocha, smoke and earthy berry fruits. The palate is layered and texturally complex, while flavors of root beer, baking spice, dried cherry and plum spread out on a smooth finish that is just right in terms of residual tannins and acid. Drink through 2030.

The canonical 2010 Gran Reserva is classic, polished and balanced, sleek and subtle, with developed aromas and fully resolved tannins. This is a great introduction to the category from a very good, balanced year and at an unbelievable price for the age and quality. It's a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo.

Carlos Serres, Spain
Carlos Serres Winery Video

Carlos Serres was a pioneer in Rioja. In 1896 he established one of the first wineries in Haro, the heart of Rioja. He was an instrumental figure in promoting the early exports of Rioja wines. Today, the Bodega remains family-owned and operated and is one of only a few centenarian producers in Rioja. The estate is Southeast of Haro, just 800 yards from the winery and spreads out over nearly 150 acres of premium Rioja Alta vineyards with vines average 20+ years old. Bodegas Carlos Serres sets out to remain one of the most internationally-renowned and influential wineries in Spain.
