Cantina Orsogna is an award-winning Abruzzo cooperative specialising in native grapes of the region such as Montepluciano d`Abruzzo, Cococciola and Pecorino.

Lunaria is an organic and biodynamic brand of the Cantina Orsogna cooperative of farmers located at the foot of the Majella National Park in Abruzzo, Italy. These wines bring the authenticity of place and terroir with a strong and bold yet everyday personality. Being fully biodynamic, organic, and vegan they are made from varietals that are intrinsic to Italian culture, showcasing the very best Abruzzo has to offer.

Lunaria promotes love for the land and its inhabitants. The biodynamic process is built to sustain the wildlife in the surrounding preserve. The unmistakable mark of Lunaria bottles is the rope binding, an ancient peasant practice passed down by grandparents, an orange thread (color of biodynamics) is applied by hand, bottle by bottle, to Lunaria wines for stopper closing.

The biodynamic principle of farming is more complex than organic. Biodynamics involves a closed production cycle (creating your own compost and fertilizer, using crop rotation), connecting innovative technologies with absolute respect for irreplaceable natural resources - land, flora and fauna. Biodynamic agriculture is strictly regulated, meeting the highest requirements and safety standards in the final product. The company, which has committed itself to biodynamic farming, undergoes double control: the first - from the European certification center for organic products, the second - from Demeter. This is a private association of winemakers, producers and exporters of wine, which conducts the examination of technical and scientific innovations in biodynamic agriculture.

Beyond the usual suspects, there are hundreds of red grape varieties grown throughout the world. Some are indigenous specialties capable of producing excellent single varietal wines, while others are better suited for use as blending grapes. Each has its own distinct viticultural characteristics, as well as aroma and flavor profiles, offering much to be discovered by the curious wine lover. In particular, Portugal and Italy are known for having a multitude of unique varieties but they can really be found in any region.

A warm, Mediterranean vine-growing paradise, in Abruzzo, the distance from mountains to seaside is relatively short. The Apenniness, which run through the center of Italy, rise up on its western side while the Adriatic Sea defines its eastern border.

Wine composition tends to two varieties: Abruzzo’s red grape, Montepulciano and its white, Trebbiano. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo can come in a quaffable, rustic and fruity style that generally drinks best young. It is also capable of making a more serious style, where oak aging tames its purely wild fruit.

Trebbiano in Abruzzo also comes in a couple of varieties. Trebbiano Toscana makes a simple and fruity white. However when meticulously tended, the specific Trebbiano d’Abruzzo-based white wines can be complex and long-lived.

In the region’s efforts to focus on better sites and lower yields, vine acreage has decreased in recent years while quality has increased.
