Winemaker Notes

Calcu Gran Reserva Cabernet Franc has an intense red, bright and velvety color. The nose is full of an expression marked by fresh berries and hints of flowers. On the palate it presents a great body with good balance, elegant tannic structure, and a long, fresh and fruity finish.

Critical Acclaim

All Vintages
V 91
Vinous
The 2019 Cabernet Franc Gran Reserva Calcu also contains a 3% dash of Petit Verdot from Marchigüe and was aged for 12 months in French barrels. Purple in hue. The pure nose offers notes of raspberry, herbs and ash over a bed of cigar box and petit-fours. The smooth flow is channeled by well-worked tannins, and ripe, diaphanous flavors appear at the back of the mouth.
JS 90
James Suckling
A bright nose, showing blackberries, blue flowers, black pepper and dark plums. Medium-bodied palate, swathed in a spiced blue-fruit context, intertwined with firm yet polished tannins. Sustainable. Drink or hold.

Rodrigo Romero is the winemaker of an exciting line of small production wines made for everyday drinking but far more interesting and distinctive than most in its category. Calcu, which means "magician" in the local Mapuche language, was created to emphasize the diversity of Chile’s Colchagua Valley with most of the estate fruit coming from the family’s cool Marchigüe vineyard.

Well-regarded for intense and exceptionally high quality red wines, the Colchagua Valley is situated in the southern part of Chile’s Rapel Valley, with many of the best vineyards lying in the foothills of the Coastal Range.

Heavy French investment and cutting-edge technology in both the vineyard and the winery has been a boon to the local viticultural industry, which already laid claim to ancient vines and a textbook Mediterranean climate.

The warm, dry growing season in the Colchagua Valley favors robust reds made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Malbec and Syrah—in fact, some of Chile’s very best are made here. A small amount of good white wine is produced from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Cabernet Franc, a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon, is the subtler and more delicate of the Cabernets. Today Cabernet Franc produces outstanding single varietal wines across the wine-producing world. Somm Secret—One of California's best-kept secrets is the Happy Canyon appellation of Santa Barbara. Here Cabernet Franc shines as a single varietal wine or in blends, expressing sumptuous fruit, savory aromas and polished tannins.
