James Suckling

Attractive nose of raspberries, morels, pine cones, dark cherries, plum stones, tea leaves and hints of charcoal. Sleek and mineral, with spicy hints and fine tannins melted into the berry fruit. Drinking beautifully.

A generous application of wood adds plenty of menthol character to the plum, cassis and violet aromas. There is ample wood on the palate as well and while it's mildly off-putting at present it's not enough to alter the mouth feel of the relatively fine and elegant flavors that possess both good volume and tannin-buffering dry extract, all wrapped in a balanced and impressively persistent finish. Even with the fine concentration this is probably at the limit of the amount of wood that the underlying material can absorb but importantly, because it doesn't alter the textured my predicted range assumes that the wood will ultimately be successfully integrated.

A pretty red, with effusive aromas and flavors of violet, black currant, black cherry, stone and spice. Shows harmony and elegance, with a serious structure underneath. The finish is long, echoing dark fruit, mineral and spice details. Best from 2018 through 2032. 100 cases imported.

The black fruit of Nuits comes across here with tense, slightly underripe highlights of rhubarb and strawberry. It’s a wine of the night sky, rather than the sun, with a mineral pull to the tannins that needs long hours of air to recede into a more gracious and refined structure. Built to cellar.

Bouchard Pere & Fils Winery Video

Founded in 1731, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of Burgundy’s oldest wine merchants and one of the largest landowners in the Côte d’Or. Over the centuries, the House has been devoted to attaining highly renowned parcels to produce exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. With uncompromising quality standards, long term grower partnerships and ageing in a state-of-the-art winery results in wines of outstanding consistency and the truest and finest expression of each terroir.

Bouchard Père & Fils joined the Henriot family portfolio in 1995.

Over time, by acquiring various terroirs with great care and patience, Bouchard Père & Fils has built up a vast domaine in Côte-d’Or. Today the estate boasts 130 hectares of vines, of which 12 are classed Grand Cru and 74 classed as Premier Cru.

Bouchard Père & Fils is an example of unique Burgundy heritage, offering great diversity and a raft of prestigious appellations: Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, Beaune Grèves Vignes de l’Enfant Jésus, Bonnes-Mares, Meursault Perrières… names that resonate with history, inspiring respect and encouraging the pursuit of excellence, with 4 monopolies and exclusives among them. These remarkable parcels are meticulously tended by our teams who are responsible for the maintenance of the estate’s vines.

Cote de Nuits, Burgundy

Inhabiting the bottom end of the northern half of the Côte d’Or, Nuits-St-Georges is a busy, market-driven town and home to many of Burgundy’s negociants. It is also the largest town in the Côte d’Or after Beaune and contributes "nuits" to the name of Côte de Nuits (i.e., the northern half of the Côte d’Or).

The appellation itself is divided into two parts, where in the north it directly borders Vosne-Romanée, the southerly end is the commune of Prémeaux. There are no Grands Crus in this village, though it does have a large number of Premiers Crus.

The best Nuits-St-Georges Pinot Noir are layered with cherry, plum, underbrush and sandalwood. The fruit is sweet, the wine energetic, and the finish long and lush.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”
