Winemaker Notes

Bogle Vineyards is very pleased to present its 2000 Chardonnay. Barrel fermentation, sur-lies aging, and partial malolactic fermentation have created a rich and elegant wine with layers of complexity. The soft and inviting aromas suggest an apple pie right out of the oven cooling on the kitchen table. A delicately creamy entry gives way to reveal fresh flavors of the apple and pear as well. Spicy oak integrates with this intense fruit, delivering a finish long and lingering.

Bogle Vineyards, California
Bogle Vineyards Winery Video
Although the Bogle family has been farming since the 1800's, it wasn't until 1968 that the father and son team of Warren and Chris Bogle planted their first 20 acres of wine grapes in Clarksburg, California. Clarksburg is a small farming community nestled in the Sacramento Delta. Today Bogle Vineyards farms over 1,000 acres of wine grapes in the Delta region. While the winery was established ten years after the first grapes were planted, it has grown tremendously along with the vineyards. Bogle Winery is currently producing 100,000 cases of wine. Winemaker Christopher Smith joined the winery in 1992. He sources fruit from some of the best vineyards throughout the State of California and blends that fruit with the best grapes from our Estate Vineyards in Clarksburg.

California’s most praised white wine, Chardonnay is also the state’s most planted white grape variety. Diverse terrain and microclimates allow for an incredible range of wine styles.

Chardonnay planted in the cooler, coastal zones takes on bright characteristics like lemon zest, key lime, green apple and wet flint. For this style, look to the chilly Sonoma Coast, Carneros, Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Lucia Highlands and Edna Valley.

The inland zones of California’s coast, such as the Russian River, Sonoma, Napa and Livermore Valleys maintain a more Goldilocks-esque climate where both styles go. Early picking retains acidity and creates a leaner style but leaving the grapes to hang creates an approachable Chardonnay, balancing richness and finesse.

Chardonnay also plays a major part in the sparkling wine production of the Anderson Valley and Carneros.
