Winemaker Notes

A particularly elegant Brunello with a complex personality, which is expressed to the nose through a series of scents that are expressed slowly, from licorice, coffee, plum jam and tobacco to end even with a slight hint of violet. The refined structure is in perfect balance with the acid part, which excellently supports the long persistence.

A long aging wine that perfectly pairs with rich and complex dishes.

Forest floor, grilled herb and pipe-tobacco aromas lead the way on this firmly structured wine. The full-bodied palate offers dried cherry, steeped prune, orange zest and licorice set against tightly knit close-grained tannins. Drink 2022–2032.

A powerful, dense version, whose leather, tar, plum and underbrush flavors are embedded in the firmly wrought tannins. Will need some time to resolve the structure, yet the core personality is there. Best from 2023 through 2035.

This wine is only produced in select vintages. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio All'Oro is an exuberant and robustly embellished wine that gives ample airtime to its various constituents. The fruit, the spice, the structure and the freshness are all played up and ultimately find seamless integration to become one big happy whole. The bouquet is intricate and exciting, but I found the mouthfeel to be heavier and more astringent than I would have hoped. There's loads of volume and power here, and the wine's texture is very rich at this young stage. Give it a few more years to develop and soften. Out of the gate, I preferred the Riserva Poggio alle Mura, but that opinion could well shift as this wine gets the upper leg following prolonged aging.

Planted in 1978, Poggio all’Oro is a 24ha plot in the Tavernelle area, sitting at 250 metres above sea level. The first Riserva was produced in 1983, and it is aged entirely in small French oak barrels. It shows restraint on the nose, with touches of vanillin, clove and cherry coming out. The tannins are firm but not aggressive, with sufficient fruit to flesh them out, and notes of leather and cedar emerge on the finish.

Among Italy's elite red grape varieties, Sangiovese has the perfect intersection of bright red fruit and savory earthiness and is responsible for the best red wines of Tuscany. While it is best known as the chief component of Chianti, it is also the main grape in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and reaches the height of its power and intensity in the complex, long-lived Brunello di Montalcino. Somm Secret—Sangiovese doubles under the alias, Nielluccio, on the French island of Corsica where it produces distinctly floral and refreshing reds and rosés.

Famous for its bold, layered and long-lived red, Brunello di Montalcino, the town of Montalcino is about 70 miles south of Florence, and has a warmer and drier climate than that of its neighbor, Chianti. The Sangiovese grape is king here, as it is in Chianti, but Montalcino has its own clone called Brunello.

The Brunello vineyards of Montalcino blanket the rolling hills surrounding the village and fan out at various elevations, creating the potential for Brunello wines expressing different styles. From the valleys, where deeper deposits of clay are found, come wines typically bolder, more concentrated and rich in opulent black fruit. The hillside vineyards produce wines more concentrated in red fruits and floral aromas; these sites reach up to over 1,600 feet and have shallow soils of rocks and shale.

Brunello di Montalcino by law must be aged a minimum of four years, including two years in barrel before realease and once released, typically needs more time in bottle for its drinking potential to be fully reached. The good news is that Montalcino makes a “baby brother” version. The wines called Rosso di Montalcino are often made from younger vines, aged for about a year before release, offer extraordinary values and are ready to drink young.
