Winemaker Notes
This blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon from the famed Tench Vineyard in Oakville and 48% Merlot from Sugarloaf Mountain leaps from the glass with notes of black currant laced with cocoa. Plush and opulent in the mouth, this hedonistic effort combines the brute force of our Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon with the curvaceous nature of our Merlot. Deep and dark, the purity of fruit is layered with tar and baking spice.

Based on 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48% Merlot, the 2017 Napa Valley Red Wine sports a deep purple hue as well as a big, rocking bouquet of blackcurrants, blueberries, melted chocolate, cedary herbs, and incense. Similar in style to winemaker Russell Bevan’s own wines with it pedal to the metal, opulent, sexy style, it’s loaded with fruit, is full-bodied, has ripe, present tannins, and is going to evolve for 15 years or more.

Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.
Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
