    Somm Note

    Winemaker Notes

It is a dark-cherry colored red wine, very intense in color, and with purple hints. In the nose, it shows very clean aromas of red and black fruits, strawberries, raspberries, cassis, very well balanced with creamy and pleasant toasted notes from the barrique. It also shows a slightly spicy touch of liquorice. In the mouth, it is rich, fruity with round and ripe tannins. It has good acidity, and shows nice notes of vanilla, smoke and coffee. A powerful wine but with a very elegant balance.

    Bodega Sierra Norte, Spain
Bodega Sierra Norte was born in 1995 as three partners joined and decided to take over this project and start producing their wines known as Cerro BERCIAL. They produce red wines aged in oak barriques and young red and rosé wines. All the Bodega's wines are conventional and organic. The wood used in the oak barrels is a mix of American and French Allier oak. New wood each year is 40% of the total we use. The cellar, located in the town limits of Requena (Valencia) is 30 minutes by car from the capital of the province, Valencia, going towards Madrid. Traditionally, this area has produced wine for sale in large quantities in bulk and retail business, but recently some wine growers in this area have seen the importance of bottling and the big quality potential of the area, and have increased their production of quality bottled wines. These wines are, without a doubt, one of the top quality wines in the region and for sure one of the only organic quality cellars. Sierra Norte also wants to give the local variety, Bobal, a main role in its wines. It is blended mainly with Tempranillo, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The cellar has also started producing organic wines in small quantities. At our vineyards, we grow the varieties Tempranillo, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Bobal in reds, and Macabeo, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc in whites. Both the cellar and vineyards are ORGANIC-certified.

Spanish red wine is known for being bold, heady, rustic and age-worthy, Spain is truly a one-of-a-kind wine-producing nation. A great majority of the country is hot, arid and drought-ridden, and since irrigation has only been recently introduced and (controversially) accepted, viticulture has sustained—and flourished—only through a great understanding of Spain’s particular conditions. Large spacing between vines allows each enough resources to survive and as a result, the country has the most acreage under vine compared to any other country, but is usually third in production.

Of the Spanish red wines, the most planted and respected grape variety is Tempranillo, the star of Spain’s Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions. Priorat specializes in bold red blends, Jumilla has gained global recognition for its single varietal Monastrell and Utiel-Requena has garnered recent attention for its reds made of Bobal.
