Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Intense color with violet hues, clean fresh fruity flavors with some hints of wood ageing and varietal notes. The structure in the mouth is well developed with the long persistent finish. An amazing wine for this level of quality and price point! A 100% Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) the most widely planted red variety in the Toro region. Deeply colored, it is aged for a short period in new American oak casks (five months) to create a wine with great structure, complexity and elegant fruit notes.

The expressive and open 2016 Penamonte 5 Meses en Barrica has good freshness and definition. It shows a combination of red berries, aromatic herbs and spice that is nicely balanced. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins. A bargain.

PenaMonte, Spain

Founded in 1890, Bodegas Riojanas treasures more than a century of winemaking tradition in its Cenicero winery. Its corners are steeped in history and the current generation (the 5th) continues to cherish the traditions set forth by past generations. The legacy is their commitment to the best quality and unique personality to their wines.

Notoriously food-friendly, long-lasting and Spain’s most widely planted grape, Tempranillo is the star variety of red wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero. The Rioja terms Joven, Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva indicate both barrel and bottle time before release. Traditionally blended in Rioja with Garnacha, plus a bit of Mazuelo (Carignan) and Graciano, the Tempranillo in Ribera del Duero typically stands alone. Somm Secret—Tempranillo claims many different names depending on location. In Penedès, it is called Ull de Llebre and in Valdepeñas, goes by Cencibel. Known as Tinta Roriz in Portugal, Tempranillo plays an important role in Port wine.

Spain's remote, high elevation Spanish wine zone between the regions of Bierzo and Ribera del Duero produces intense, full-bodied reds made from Tempranillo, locally called Tinta de Toro. This local variant has adapted to the region’s climatic extremes and recognizing its potential, top producers from Ribera del Duero and Rioja have invested heavily in its vineyards.
