Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Golden in color with pale yellow highlights. Expressive and delicate on the nose with elegant floral notes and fresh yellow fruit aromas. Rich and full-bodied with incredible balance and an emphasis on freshness. The finish is long with a delightful hint of bitterness. Pair with rich, creamy dishes like vegetable risotto, poultry in a cream sauce and foie gras. The balance and acidity of the wine is a perfect partner for these rich dishes. Aging potential of 5-10 years.

Domaine Graeme & Julie Bott, France
Julie Bott was born in the Northern Rhône Valley and Graeme Bott is from New Zealand. They met in the small village of Ampuis while working for Stephane Ogier, a producer in Côte-Rôtie. Their passion for wine was the motivation behind the decision to create their own wine estate in the Northern Rhône Valley and together they planted Viognier and Syrah vines in the appellations of CONDRIEU, CÔTE-RÔTIE, SAINT-JOSEPH and SEYSSUEL. Initially Graeme and Julie transformed their own garage into a cellar to make their first three vintages, but have now expanded to a cellar in Ampuis, where their goal is to let the terroir of schist and granite express itself fully in their work. Graeme and Julie produce only micro-volumes of wine and favor quality over quantity. In 2019, Graeme and Julie were named Winemakers & Terroirs of the Future ("Vignerons et Terroirs d'Avenir") by the AdVini Group, in partnership with the Montpellier SupAgro Foundation. This award includes a monetary investment as well as training sessions with AdVini experts. Graeme and Julie are fiercely passionate about preserving and honoring the incredible terroir they call home and have made a commitment to growing their grapes using sustainable and organic farming practices.

Full-figured and charmingly floral, Viognier is one of the most important white grapes of the northern Rhône where it is used both to produce single varietal wines and as an important blending grape. Look for great New World examples from California, Oregon, Washington and cooler parts of Australia. Somm Secret—Viognier plays a surprisingly important role in the red wines of Côte Rôtie in the northern Rhône. About 5% Viognier is typically co-fermented with the Syrah in order to stabilize the color, and as an added benefit, add a subtle perfume.

Condrieu Wine

Rhone, France

As the source of some of the most vibrant and powerful white wines in France, Condrieu is uniquely situated in one of the northern outposts of the Rhone River. It is the original Viognier appellation with a wine growing history reaching back well over two thousand years. Like most of the wine regions of the Northern Rhone, Condrieu’s vines grow on extremely steep and narrow granite terraces. But what makes the region unique is a topsoil, locally called, “arzelle,” made of decomposed mica. This and a sheltering of the harsh northern winds, make optimal sites to produce opulent and brilliant Viognier. It is a tiny zone with no room for expansion and produces miniscule amounts of wine each year, contributing to its allure.

A fine Condrieu will have aromas and flavors suggestive of ripe stone fruit, lime peel, green almond, ginger, white flowers and toasted nuts. A honeyed smell may mislead you to think the wine will be sweet but the modern style favors totally dry on the palate. Its texture will be full and soft but a touch of mineral will provide great balance.
