Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Densely colored, ruby red, almost black, which develops to garnet with the aging of the wine. Aromatically sensational, intense, with notes of mature fruit and hints of spice and aromas of vanilla transcended from the barriques. Potent, soft and velvety on the palate.

Serve with meat roasts, steak, matured cheeses game and international cuisine.

The 2009 Montefalco Sagrantino Collepiano offers a modern interpretation of a traditional wine once made by monks. The extra oak intensity leads to soft tones of chocolate, dark cherry and spice. This wine ages in barrique for 22 months. Each producer finds his or her own way to tame the brutal tannins of Sagrantino. One way Marco does this is with oak. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.

Polished and spicy, this structured wine features aromas of leather, truffle, blackberry and savory herb. The juicy palate delivers layers of fleshy black plum, black cherry, freshly ground peppercorn, tobacco and thyme alongside big, velvety tannins. Drink 2016–2024.
  • 90
Harmonious and tightly knit, with a subtle density to the frame of firm, fine-grained tannins and light acidity, showing hints of medicinal herbs, sun-dried black cherry, bresaola, ground anise and graphite. Drink now through 2024.

Arnaldo Caprai Winery Video

The family operation began in 1971 when textiles entrepreneur Arnaldo Caprai purchased 12.5 acres in Montefalco. In 1988, ownership passed on to Arnaldo’s son, Marco, who began the project to cultivate the promotion of the grape that has been growing in the Montefalco region for more than 400 years: Sagrantino. Today, the winery is the leading producer of top quality Sagrantino di Montefalco, a wine produced exclusively from this native variety. In addition to its commitment to quality, Arnaldo Caprai is recognized for its dedication to environmental, economic and social sustainability, as well as being champions for the wines of Umbria. Winery visits available for tasting.
