Located close to the village of Cotignac in the heart of Provence, Clos de l'Ours is a natural clos, completely enclosed by pine & oak forest. Organic farming practices have been implemented since 2000. As of 2021, they are certified biodynamic & organic (2012). Though the Brotons family has only owned the winery since 2012, they have one of the most knowledgeable and well-respected oenologists of the region guiding them - Daniel Abrial - formerly of Domaine du Tempier, La Bastide Blanche, and Domaine de la Tour de Bon. After several years of searching for the ideal site on which to make wine, the Brotons discovered this estate, thanks to the help of their longtime friend and winemaker Eloi Durbach of Domaine de Trevallon (les Beaux, Provence). When Eloi heard this unique domaine was up for sale, he urged them to jump at the opportunity. Their focus on the terroir, producing wines that showcase the clay and limestone soils, is carried through their vineyard planting. They work with local varietals only - Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, Cinsault for the reds, and Clairette, Ugni Blanc, & Rolle, for the whites. Their son, Fabien, is now involved and oversees the cave and vinification. Their embrace of organic viticulture to produce wines of finesse and character includes the commitment to organic fertilizer, sheep weeding, plowing by horses, and no pesticides or chemical treatments. The vines are hand-harvested in small 30kg boxes and meticulously sorted before vinification. They use indigenous yeasts, and the reds are unfined and unfiltered. The resulting wines show a delicate balance of refinement and power.
